We went to BR after the Saints game. Rest of my family was stuck on i10
My immediate family had moved to BR a few years before Katrina, so we had 33 people in our house for about a month

I actually have a box with all my "favorite" pictures, insurance info and things like my birth certificate and SS card, etc... in it.
Other than that - I pack a few changes of clothes and make sure somebody I'm traveling with has a chainsaw.
I already have a gas can, flashlight, batteries, 2 jugs of water etc... in my car.
It's the stuff that I consider "memories" that are the most important things I take when I evacuate.

cash, water purification tablets, 5 gallons of water, a few lighters, 3 MREs, gun, flashlight, wind up radio (this can also act as a hand held phone charger), sleeping bag, tent, 2 pairs of pants, 2 shirts, 4 pairs of socks and underwear, boots.

Crazy it's 10 years.
Yeah, I had many extended cajuns in my house for Gustav. I know how that is. My only good memory in that week, was taking some king crab legs from the freezer before it was all too thawed, and cooking them outside by myself.

Well, it's not like those just come out of nowhere. You shouldn't need a "go" bag unless you're in law enforcement, a hitman (or hitwoman), or in the witness protection program.
Otherwise, buy home insurance with various riders on certain items, keep important documents in a deposit box, and other valuables in a fire proof safe or the same deposit box.

One of the must haves if you live in a hurricane are is about 20 gallons of gas in cans. The gas stations will be out of gas or closed and you will get stuck on the road.

Gas will go bad. Make sure you rotate your supply.
