The old “ideas > events > people” chestnut has always resonated with me. If you want me to really engage, let’s talk about something subjective and abstract. If you want to me to shut down immediately, start talking about people, particularly if you’re doing so negatively.

I like asking a person questions and learning new things. I don’t care if it’s science, history, art, music, news, something they’re interested in that I’ve never known about, etc…if they’re teaching me something I didn’t know before, I’m interested. I think people today talk about a lot of things that don’t enrich the lives of the people to whom they are talking, and that’s why the other thread exists.

Definitely seconding this as well.

why did I read this?
why?

I knew better and I read it anyway, like a train wreck in slow motion you can’t look away. Will there be a point? Will any of this verbal diarrhea coalesce into a coherent thought?

I actually don’t mind talking about travel and vacations. Can be kind of cool and I’m always jotting down recommended hotels, restaurants, etc. based on what others have talked about. Also love when people talk about where they come from, things they did growing up or in college, fun stories about their parents or grandparents, etc. I don’t really care to hear about kids and grandkids, and especially don’t like hearing about health topics.

I ask myself that often and always come up with the same answer.

I really just don't like talking to people.

It’s not about what it’s about who the conversation is with. With that said, 90% of people I’d prefer not to converse casually with.

I talk to hear myself talk, but don’t talk a lot until I do.
