Sorry you have no concept of the reality outside of the people you know. All of my friends are in the O&G industry and they make good money too. I'm not ignorant to think the whole country is like that.

So upper middle class ends at the 98th percentile of income?

No. I don't think there is a set number.. so this is kind of a dumb way to look at it. There are tons of variables.

I came from a family of 6.. I think my parents made close to that number but probably a little less. We never considered ourselves upper class and certainly didn't live that lifestyle.

I don't feel upper middle class at all, but apparently to some people in this thread I am.

My wife even drives a "2012 Lexus RX 330 with Ursuline magnet and understated "31A" sticker in rear window" minus the ursuline sticker.

I think upper middle class would be more about what you have than what you make personally.

This is such a relative argument though. Of course middle class in a big city is different than a small town in Montana.

I didn't want to get in specifics but if that's his definition of "work" then yeah, I work.

So, what do you call the income that falls between 100k and 250k? IMO middle class is from 75k or so to 250k. If you make over 250k you're probably considered upper class. from 150k to 250k upper middle class. 75k to 150k middle class.

I guess you didn't read my response.

100k-250k - Upper middle class
250k - Upper class

Of course this is dependent on region, salary isn't the only indicator, etc. But at a national level based on average household incomes I think that is a decent scale. As someone posted before less than 5% of US households make over 250k, that says upper class to me, not middle.

How do you think middle class starts at 75k when the median (see: middle) US household income is 50k? Some of you people are straight delusional.

Some of us graduated and the 'dreams' became a reality. So we're now considered upper middle class in our 20s and don't see ourselves as such.

I'd be willing to bet that most recent college grads aren't pulling in over $100K. You're the exception I guess.

Realistically, around 150k annual and saving at least 30k a year.

If I marry someone with half a brain then I'll hit this number easily by the time I am 30.

Upper class starts around 250k for a family, IMO.

It wouldn't be JUST the 98th percentile. It would be a range, no?

Thats why I said percentile group, as in a range. Although, I personally dont think the range for upper middle class is all that large either. But Upper class is very small

Well, I guess I'd consider 50k-75k as lower middle class. I'm referring to gross income for households here.

I have no knowledge of said oil field and the people that work there.

To me an upper middle class person is someone who's taken their earnings and saved/invested enough to live a comfortable lifestyle without any outside assistance. They can travel and enjoy their lives after their earning days are over. They do not need to rely on a check from the government to cover living expenses after retirement. Just my view.

Earnings don't really matter in this scenario. It's what you keep and what you do with it that matters.

This is what I'm thinking. I doubt that it's rare for two college educated people to make a combined 150k, after a few years of experience. (not referring to people who major in english, teaching, etc...)

I'd agree with this which lines up with the definition I gave above. I'd think the percentage of the population that can self sustain after retirement isn't a large number.
