uh no

Uh, yes. Usually, certain jobs earn you more money than others, which is why some are "middle class" jobs and others are "working class" jobs.

There is a reason it's called "socio-economic status" and not just "economic status".

Which is crazy to me since those "cheapest" homes in NY wouldn't be considered livable by most on here yet could buy you a McMansion in most LA suburb neighborhoods.
you can buy a mcmansion in the suburbs of NYC on a 350k income and youll get better schools, roads, lower crime, etc.

If I had one brother in jail and another in DC, I'd get the one out of DC first. But, as you said, to each his own.

there are some truly great towns in the surrounding areas that are ideal for raising a family

I have a cousin that lives in N VA & owns his own highly successful company. His wife commutes to DC most days and works as a lobbyist. Fun to visit, but there's no way I would want to live there. It just doesn't suit my lifestyle & I know I would be miserable living there.

BTW, I find it interesting that everyone wants so much to call themselves middle class or upper middle class that they will try to change the definition as much as possible so that it's advantageous to them.

Fact of the matter is that there is much more to socio-economic status than money. Once you realize that you'll be better off.

You can't buy class, and you have to earn status.

Compared to Baton Rouge? I think the real estate values don't compare at all.

There's a lot more cost of living than real estate values. And I didn't say any borough of NYC "compared" to BR.

CNN's cost of living calculator says that $150K in BR is equal to $250K in Queens and $285K in Brooklyn. That's a bit off the $350K quoted earlier. It does appear that the number is true for Manhattan.

Yes. That is an appropriate refinement.

Oh, I certainly understand that. Remind me, what's the cost for a parking space in Baton Rouge?

$150K in Louisiana (and in most places) is easily upper middle class. I know what I have and I know how I live, and I know that most around me aren't doing the same. Of course, maybe they are smart and save some of their money. I constantly feel broke.

My fiancé and I, 27 and 29 would be "well off" by this definition. My father would be over double the bottom level of your upper class threshold.

This cannot be based on annual income alone, accumulated wealth needs to be factored in there.

Those numbers look just right to me.

Haven't read the whole thread, but has anyone defined upper middle class as "having this kind of stuff, or doing this type of stuff" yet?

I'm just saying after I pay a $1400 house note and 2 $600 car notes I live check to check...... Only difference between me and a guy in a trailer in Livingston is the bank will give me more rope to hang myself with. Money just doesn't go far. I remember being 20yrs old and thinking people who make 70k should have all their shite together... Now I make twice that and I actually had more cash then.

Two $600 car notes seems a little excessive don't you think?
