Exactly

The OT is the last place I'd ask any financial-related questions.

i think this is more of a social discussion than economic, but there is some extreme delusion in this thread about household income.

There usually is on here.

The top 1% is really segregated.

The op clearly meant economic status, but for whatever reason, people started talking about the vague and useless "social class" distinction, as if that has any relevance in today's world.

That's the nature of class. Why do you think people in the south typically ask what what your parents do. It's meant to get an immediate assertion of your perceived social class.

Social class means far more in some places than others. When I lived in North La, it was a pretty big deal. It isn't around here.

Someone else brought up a good point. The lower/lower middle class has access to things that the upper class also uses. iPhones.. nice cars.. etc.
You don't see anyone without a smartphone anymore. You see lower class people wearing $200 shoes and carrying $600 purses.
I work for an insurance company, and half of the people who are constantly missing payments and making their policy lapse are people driving 2013 nice vehicles.
But I think having these nice things makes people think they're better off than they are.

You are a little out of touch if you think it means nothing in "today's world". Of course it's not of the same importance as it once was, but in more affluent areas it is everything.

Explain to me how it matters? Who decides it? How can I tell which social class I am in, and why should I care to know? What does someone with $10mm in assets and $500k annually who us considered "lower social class" miss out on that they want to do?
Seriously, who cares? At this point, nearly everything one could want to do can be accomplished with money. This isn't the middle ages.

In some places it matters. Not nearly as prevelant as in times past.

Ehhh.
There's definitely a world that some upper class live in that we know nothing about and would not fit into.
ETA: But I do agree with you as well.
