Items we don't buy for the designated use/up our spending on when we would be happy with a lower cost alternative in order to make the statement we have the disposable income to do so

You are exactly right. I am a lardass at the moment, finally decided it is time to lose the weight again, every doctor I have ever had is always pills first.
I lost the weight once before when told of bad labs, told this current doctor "you know I could do that" and it was in one ear and out the other.

I bet if the average American downsized a little bit on their house, bought a slightly cheaper car, and skipped buying silly luxuries like expensive clothes, accessories, etc, and spent more of that money on vacations and their free time, people's happiness would grow immensely.
That's just my opinion.

Me personally is food. I eat out at places that charge $8-$15/meal way too often.

Yea, I would never call it a waste in reality. But it burns a lot of my disposable cash.
