Of having a celebrity appears in their advertising? I'm not more likely to buy something because say, George Clooney, appears in the advertisement.....

I think it's retarded, but it obviously works or else they wouldn't do it

The whole trick with advertising is you want the public to actually hear your message about your product. One way to help ensure more people are paying attention to your message is if you have that message being given by a celebrity people recognize (and hopefully like) instead of some random stranger they care nothing about.

(Honestly, this is like Marketing 101. How do you not know this?)

I was just thinking about this, Jennifer Garner and Sam Jackson have been in Capital One ads for years now.

I wonder how many people are swayed by them being on there

But you would if it were just some random dude?

As Darth says: they’re good at keeping your attention, that’s why they make big money even for voice over work. Clooney sells Mazdas, John Hamm is Mercedes, John Slattery is Lincoln, and so on. Because they have voices we know.

Again, they're not there to sway you just because of who they are. The reason to use celeberties is to improve the chances you don't tune out their commercial and instead actually listen to what they say.

The watch industry is one of the classic examples of using brand ambassadors. It apparently works for them as almost all major luxury watch manufacturers use them. They also heavily rely on product placement in movies and TV. It is hard to walk out of a Bond franchise movie and not know Bond was wearing an Omega or two and they have even taken a shot or two at Rolex in the films, Rolex being the original Bond watch both in the novels and early films.

“Nice watch. Rolex?”
“Omega.”
“Gorgeous.”

And now I’m wearing a Planet Ocean

Are you more likely to buy if they support something you like? Less like if they support something you don't?

I can assure you Nike has no regrets in hiring Michael Jordan.

I can't remember the last time any type of advertising has influenced me to buy a particular product. A large number of them have just the opposite affect on me... I would never buy that crap.

I understand why they do it, but it honestly does not sway me. I may be less likely to buy a product if I despise the celebrity. George Clooney and Alec Baldwin are good examples.

I totally agree here. Especially in the politicization of everything environment we live in now days. I'm sure a lot of people would be turned off to a product because of the celebreties political views.

Exactly. So many celebrities are hypocritical idiots. I will not certain movies, even if it’s a great film, because I just don’t want to support a certain actor.

This is true... and this is why these phucks think their opinion means something.
