Was getting snacks at gas station. Take them over to the counter. Cashier (who doesn't speak English wonderfully well) asks me if I am using debit. I say yeah, sure, and as I'm pulling out my wallet, I see I have enough cash. So I count out the cash into the counter and I look up and the cashier slams his hand on the counter and is starring at me with such incredible fricking hate. We look at each other for like 10 seconds and then he says:

Cashier "that is disrespectful. You are disrespecting me."
Me: "huh?"
Cashier" you count the money while I'm putting the items in the bag."
Me: "what? Huh? I'm sorry, I don't really see what I did wrong and I didn't understand."
He says nothing.
Me: "what can I do?"
Cashier: "just forget it."
I tell him he can keep the change and leave.

I just don't think I've ever had someone look at me like that though and I have no clue why.

You went wrong when you didn't just walk out and take your money elsewhere.

Tell him you've changed your mind, walk away, buy nothing.

I have had a lady get upset because I put the money on the counter rather than in her hand. Though to be fair she had some kind of shingles or skin disease and diseases of the skin are my number one phobia.

I have a manservant who takes care of these types of issues.

Here's the solution:

Get a manservant or become one.

It is a culture thing, obviously. Attendant needs to lighten up and you did nothing wrong.

In some cultures, it is disrespectful to not hand over money directly. They feel as if you think they are diseased/not worthy of direct interaction and take it personally. Just move on.

Would it disrespect the gentleman if he handed over the money and then whipped out some hand sanitizer to disinfect himself?

He sounds like he's from Myanmar. If you count money while one is putting things in the bag, it signifies that you want to pork his daughter. Many go to war over this.

What you did wrong is buy legitimate items and forced an actual transaction while all he really wants to do on a Sunday is sell illegal contraband for under the table cash. Can't blame him

it's only if I see it. I get really nervous and twitchy. I can't explain it.

My grandparents had this old 1905 book called "Diseases of the skin" and I read it when I was really young, I can remember the pictures now. Ever since then they have all freaked me out. I can pick up cockroaches, handle shite, and be all up in the nastiest of nasty crap, but skin diseases freak me out.
