The Jettas are okay. On par with Ford, Chevy, or Nissan but with more tasteful styling.

The diesels were a big part of their appeal but that's not an option anymore.

I have a 2012 Passat with 80k miles that's never been in the shop for anything, not even brakes. I really like this car.

Get a Honda or a Toyota. Your options for reliable maintenance are very limited.

I have a 2009 Jetta and cannot recommend

I have a 2011 Jetta SE with 92k miles. Honestly it's a good car that gets good gas mileage (I can drive from here in South Carolina to Fayetteville on $80). My only issue with them are a few electrical problems I've had that are annoying. Other than that they're solid and low maintenance.

Because they're German and German cars depreciate like hell, especially VWs since the whole diesel scandal gave the brand a black mark.

Look for the turbodiesels or the 2.5L 5-cylinders. Only get a gas turbo if the seller/dealer can prove it's been well taken care of.

My '14 diesel has 107k and all I've had to do to it is maintenance. fricking incredible car. It's a shame they had to pull them from the market because I would love to have a brand new Passat diese.

I've been told to stay away from the 1.8 liter turbo.
