re: What can actually be done about homeless people?

Its a major problem, and i'm kind of afraid nothing can be done but its largely because there are not a lot of full time jobs available with a living wage (especially considering the skyrocketing costs of healthcare that somehow we subsidize the rest of the world for).
Jobless rates are tricky because they dont' count people who stopped looking for work or people who are underemployed (part time, a person with a graduate degree waiting tables, etc.) But the labor participation rate is like 62% and the under-employment rate is like 15% - 20%. Lots of people can only find part time work or menial jobs despite having college degrees / graduate degrees.
And like 90%+ of jobs created over the past decade or so are part time / gig work that doesn't carry benefits which, coupled with the high costs of health insurance, leads to people barely scraping by.
SSDI is basically acting as unemployment insurance on the large scale, especially when you look at like the mid-west and factory workers replaced by automation. 50% never worked again despite going through attempted "re-training programs" by the government and of those again roughly 50% filed for disability.
Its a major, major problem and it's only going to get worse without some new angles of attack.

Sounds like you've been to one too many Bernie rallies.

Oh no I'm not socialist and would never vote for Bernie - "Billionaires Shouldn't Exist" is a weird and dumb stance to take at a minimum.
We don't currently live in true capitalist society though, I just think the way we view capitalism needs adjusting / tweaking - mainly because automation will soon result in people who want to work hard still not being valuable to the bottom lines because machines can just do jobs better.
I also firmly believe that the welfare money currently spent (plus a ton of other government waste) is much better served going into the hands of me and you instead of the bloated big gov. machine.

The issue with UBI is they won't cut out the other programs, or if they do, UBI will become needs based and we'll be in the same boat.

Absolutely, it could become another terrible gov't implementation thing if the super progressive left just stacks it on top of all welfare and wastes a ton of the money on bureaucratic bloat with needs testing, case workers and all that bullshite.

Nothing will be done, and it will only get worse.

There are homeless shelters available, but it seems to be a first come, first serve type of deal.
The problem with many homeless shelters is they’re dangerous and really dirty. I've spoken to many homeless who refuse to stay at one. They fear for their safety (women, especially) and many are infested with bed bugs.

Apparently there is a company that can turn a shipping container into a livable space for $55,000.

Cut a deal with one of the freight carriers to ship them all off to San Francisco.

LINK
I read it in a book, but this was the first google I saw. I bet we see more and more stuff about the rise of the "gig" economy - which is one big reason as to why I cam around on healthcare reform largely because the model if it being tied to employment doesnt seem to be sustainable going forward.

Automation will continue to wipe out industries. The future could be frightening for a large portion of our population.

Ya I thought the whole thing was insane when I first heard but the more I looked the more he made a ton of sense.
Still not sold on all aspects of his plan but if we wait until the automation wave hits it is going to be really really bad for a large portion of the country, and nobody else seems to talk about it much - at least they are starting to now.

We own a bunch of random islands, right?
Why not just stock them with cardboard, planks, those metal tin roof pieces, some grocery carts, & all the drugs we seize in raids. Throw in some fishing rods + tackle.
Ship all the hobos to said islands.
Streets are clean. Fittest survive. Out of sight, out of mind.

Almost literally no one is homeless in America for a reason other than drugs or a mental illness
Another false statement by one of the most idiotic posters on this or any other board

Most have mental illness.
Many others have drug issues and are totally fine panhandling.
Lastly some are vets who have issues ranging from injuries to PTSD.
For the vets I think yes they should get housing. I have no issues with money going to our veterans.
The ones with mental illness need help.
The drug addicts, provide them with unlimited fentanyl.
