How about this, when you are prescribed medication, do not take it upon yourself to exceed the prescribed dosage.

Damn, when you put it that way, it seems kinda obvious. Well I guess you took care of that problem, good work everybody. On to the next issue....

Hey, get all that 'high and mighty' personal responsibility out of here. We need a boogeyman to blame, and besides look at all the profits Big Pharma makes! Clearly they are evil.

I think most people on the OT believe in legalized dope.

I think dope should be given away for free.

Logically, it is possible. They could have overdosed but survived, then gone on to suicide or death by other means.

To the gentleman whose friends were destroyed by opiates, my condolences. I mean no disrespect.

I know a few people as well who have had zero problem with addiction and have taken them for years. I don't see how the user is not to blame here. It's very obvious your fricking priorities are already somewhat out of whack if you have to leave your family and everything you have ever known to become a junkie. I feel zero sympathy for drug addicts and would say the same if my fricking own parents died from it. I would feel sad from the actual death but they are absolutely at fault for their demise.

I know directions are hard for people to follow but if people would read the directions follow the warning labels where would we be?

My mother could hit 44 Lortabs a day. Fact......and she's not dead yet. Docs and counsellors were amazed at her cockroach like constitution.

as far as what OP says, I agree this is a problem and am sorry for all those who have died, but basically disagree that it is big pharma/fda causing it- it is poor decisions by those who chose to abuse the drug. If we start to try and over regulate what people have access to where does it end?

You really don't get it.....

Let me explain: you saying that it's a lack of personal responsibility, while a true statement, isn't a productive one. You've confused assigning blame with solving a problem.

You're like a blow-hard on cable news who "blames the parents" for the failing schools. Yeah it might be true, but you're not helping, just beating your chest to show off some moral superiority.

These drugs (specifically Oxycontin) are marketed as non addictive though and handed out like candy by doctors for the most benign conditions.

Yes, personal responsibility is a big part, but it is a far too simplistic way to look at this.

So the people you know that didn't struggle with addiction never got addicted? Shocking.

Some people are easily addicted to things. Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, shopping, adrenaline, etc.

I happen to be someone who doesn't get addicted to anything. But I don't pretend that it's that easy for everyone else. Because some people have differently wired brains and easily become physically dependent on these things.

On the contrary, I not trying to "solve" anything, I am pointing out that the blame is misplaced. If you want to solve a problem, you had better be sure what the problem is.

Where is oxy marketed, and to whom?

Not sure about the cable news part, but student success in school is absolutely on the shoulders of the parents.

Apparently you are the one who is confused. When people point out that you are directing your 'problem solving' energy in the wrong place, they are not suggesting that simply identifying the problem is the solution, they (we) are trying to redirect your focus to where the actual problem is so that it may be solved.

If we can't agree what the problem is, we will hardly be able to agree on a solution.
