I gave up being catholic for lent about 15 years ago. Turns out the 40 days was enough to break the bad habit.
Seems like the only logical answer and a commitment which would be pretty easy to meet......

Don't forget that you are not required to abstain or sacrifice on Sundays.
PreVatican 2 - all of lent and every Friday you had to abstain from meat. Catholics are actually supposed to still make a little sacrifice on every Friday but most have not been taught that

The abstinence on Fridays was never abrogated, only deemphasised; but quietly not discussed you are correct.

When I was about 18 years old I was in a bank in downtown Atlanta cashing my paycheck. An older woman, in her 40s, which was old as dirt to me at the time, came in the bank and had a smudge between her eyes. Being the kind young man I was raised to be I quietly told her "ma'am - you have something on your forehead". She laughed and said "thank you". I thought she had lost her mind but was raised not to frick with the feeble so I left her alone. After noticing her smudged forehead I started seeing them everywhere....I had no idea what was going on. Atlanta is not exactly known as a Catholic city LOL....I had never noticed it before. I am still pretty convinced that you got to be a little bit touched in the head to walk around like that but fricking with the feeble minded is not nice.....

Matthew 6:16-18 - “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
There are plenty of Protestants who fast. It's not segmented to a certain time of Lent. They just do it when they feel a calling from God not just during Lent.
