It doesn't matter if people still use them, that's not how we determine the usefulness of something that is government funded.
They're a huge waste of money and the only people who disagree are the ones who grew up (middle school/high school) during a time when cell phones and internet connections weren't ubiquitous.
Libraries are unnecessary and a waste of tax dollars. In many cities they're simply a refuge for the homeless.
Denver Post: Homeless spending days at Denver’s libraries find help in the stacks

A crowd waits outside Denver’s Central Library on cold winter mornings, many of them homeless, their backpacks and wheeled luggage carts heavy with necessities of life on the street.
When the doors open at 10 a.m., they rush inside

I use the library all the time. Most of them have an e-book catalog you can download to a kindle as well, which I'm a big fan of. My taxes already pay for it, so why not use the service? Obviously there are books I want to own, but for those I will never revisit or need to make notes in, I just see if the library has it.

Just because Denver has a stoner homeless group doesn't mean it's unecessary. Libraries have adpated to serve as community centers and not just a place to house books. Just because you stay at home, look on the internet and make your candles doesn't mean others don't meet up at the library to discuss, share, and demostrate a hands on approach to candle making.

Spend more time with smart people. I suggest the library.

Why do I have to pay for you to have a spot to hang out?
Go to starbucks. Or go to a park or a local university library. Community libraries usually receive federal funding. Why do I have to pay for homeless people to sleep and bang in public libraries in Denver or Baton Rouge?
My candle-making group is perfectly fine meeting at my place so we can share ideas and enjoy each other's company.

You can use it. You choose not to.
This is like me complaining about roads that I don't use.

Have you priced new books lately? Why should I pay $18 for a book that I will read once when I can borrow it for free.

Again, that it exists is not an argument for the necessity of its existence.
It's actually like you complaining about roads that shouldn't have been built.

Of course it isn't a necessity. Never claimed it was.
I'm sure there are plenty of libraries that could be shut down. But there are also plenty that communities get real use from.

Not at all. Because people/taxpayers use libraries.

Is it really that much of a financial burden on cities?

Then those communities should pay for them without federal dollars.

Are most local libraries federally funded?

I think that community libraries should not receive federal funding. Not because I think it's a huge financial burden to tax payers, but because principally why should you be required to pay for homeless people to sleep and have sex in the Greek Classics section of the Chattanooga Public Library? In addition to that, local communities will be incentivized to better care for their libraries and maintain them in the absence of federal funding.

If you can show me where local libraries are receiving federal funding, I'll agree with you here.
But this is where you should have started your argument.

Most receive supplemental funding from federal dollars. Some smaller cities receive very little. Other libraries in larger cities receive much more. Point being, if it's so important to your community, your community should receive no federal money.

So why not get rid of them and save some money?
Funding libraries is not crippling the government. Can we maybe cut grants to study whether transgendered people are upset by by the use of the term vegetarian instead?

So you are not for any public spaces? Parks, streetscapes, landmarks, little league fields?

Nope, they're actually thinking I wish we lived in an area where we could meet up where we don't have to put up with the narcissistic SOB.
