I remember when the librarian was a much older woman: Kindly,
discreet, unattractive. We didn't know anything about her private life.
We didn't want to know anything about her private life. She didn't have a private life.

I’m pretty sure libraries are used in the same way they’ve always been used. Dumbass.

My wife and I go at least once a month. We both read a lot and I always find tons of books that interest me. While you can augment a lot via internet even the technical stuff tends to be watered down. I am currently working on a tome about acoustics and just finished one on electric motor theory. Both areas the internet is weak on and both of the books are quite expensive (since both are textbooks) and it is just nice to sate my curiosity without spending $300 on a subject that I am only mildly interested in.

This is stupid. Of all the places to save money I don’t think Libraries are the place.
Technology doesn’t take away from free books and knowledge. Explain how society is better without libraries

We go to the libraries here frequently.
My 5yo is a voracious reader and she blows through books. So my wife will get like 20 at a time for her to read each month and journal for school.

I don't go to the library but every time I pass either the main branch or the bluebonnet one they always seem to have a full parking lot. Nothing wrong with giving people access to books.

Public libraries have adapted incredibly well to our age, actually. Not only do they have many thousands of books (still), they have digital subscriptions for every periodical, science magazine, newspaper, and whatever else you could possibly think of. They are still some of the ultimate repositories of knowledge. They provide free internet access and free access to digital knowledge (that usually requires a fee, but libraries provide for free) that would otherwise be inaccessible.
They provide free internet access to a whole heck of a lot of people. They have beautiful architecture in many cities. They remain public places of neutral meeting and community building in many, many communities.
I think the role of public libraries should be greatly expanded with commensurate budget support. The librarian is still a trusted figure in our society along with the military officer and the doctor. A lot of good could come from it.

My mom uses the one in Zachary religiously, for both ebooks and regular old paper books.
I know several people who get DVDs and CDs from the main library on Goodwood.

Public library nearest me has a small coffee shop inside that they only staff with autistic teenagers/adults. Some of the profits of the shop go to autism programs.
They also have passes you can check out for free admission to various museums/exhibits in Scottsdale and Phoenix.
Most libraries nowadays do wayyy more than check out books

My local library is one block away. I walk there to use the study rooms when there is to much to distract me around the house. I recently had to write a research paper and was able to pull my resources from there and found a great book on Cajun history in the process.
