Congratulations on surrendering your privacy and allowing yourself to be surveilled.

You mean the one with the disabled location settings and turned off Wi-Fi?

Upon awakening I say. "Alexa, Good Morning" and my Echo Show routine:
Turns on the light(s), tells me the time, updates me on the weather today, checks my Outlook calendar for the day, reads me the News headline and plays Jack Johnson for 30 minutes....
Also, really good for whole house background music if you have 5 or 6 of them...

I feel like you could count the tin foil hats in this thread.
I have a smart plug that controls the TV which is awesome. Also if you have fire TV, you can pause, find a show, fast froward and all that with your voice.
I also have my smart thermostat so controlling the temp with our voice is pretty awesome.
My favorite random skills are telling her to set timers when in the middle of cooking, and telling her to play whatever music I want when I come home and am getting settled.

Hmm, so just to confirm, smart home devices like echo can be secretly programmed to do nefarious things but as long as you “turn off” your WiFi and location survives, you’re good. That’s like saying gun control stops criminals from having guns. It makes you feel good but let’s not kid ourselves.

We found the guy who has a firm understanding of 2008's cell phone technology.

I understand my smartphone creeps me and can be tracked. I am not an idiot.
That said, I have never heard of my phone (or any phone) transmitting recorded conversations to complete strangers, or ordering shite automatically from Amazon.

We've got several smart plugs, Ecobee thermostat, and a Schlage smart deadbolt on the door we use most often. I have routines set up so that when I tell Alexa goodnight, she turns off the smart plugs, lowers the AC, and locks my door. Vice-versa when I tell her good morning. I also have routines set up when I tell her goodbye and welcome me home.
We also have an echo at my in-laws' house, and it's come in handy a few times to drop in on when we need to talk to them.
Of course, music is good. It's awesome for unit conversion in the kitchen and shopping list.
One day I'm sure cars will be connected and Alexa could turn the car on for you in the morning.. that'd be awesome
As for privacy, well.. I was already deeply embedded into Google, so I was already pretty accustomed to the idea that they're listening.

Do they not have a phone?

1) maybe they’re better at it
2) that “sending recordings to someone else” is anecdotal at best
Either way, I could not care less if someone has a smart home device or not. It’s just that anti-smart homers are laughable with these posts that somehow we’re just now being able to be spied on when they’re literally carrying a traceable microphone and video camera with them everywhere.

You gonna get rid of your smart phone too...?

Why would the government want to spy on you goofballs? They’d get pretty bored spying on me!

Hahahahaha. That’s cute that you think that will help.

Best use for Alexa is as a remote for my enetwrtainment center. Turn on/off the TV, music, change the channels without ever wondering where my remote is.

NOFOX, where’d you get the name from?

Ask it to tell you a joke. Also, ask it to stop recording when you are mentioning drug use, money laundering or things the company you work for may be doing that are not exactly above board because that stuff will come back to haunt you.
