I thought the any other student part didn't kick in until 2026-2027.

Regardless, they're projecting a $500m+ budget deficit for FY26-27. This program is a pipe dream unless they find the money for it. (more taxes).

So get in the program early and you are set for your kids school career per the following rules:

quote:

Students currently participating in the Louisiana Scholarship Program or LA GATOR

quote:

Siblings of students currently participating in LA GATOR

from website:
quote:

Students having participated in the Louisiana Scholarship Program during the 2024-2025 school year, subject to the allocation of state funds, shall be awarded an amount equal to the award amount received during the 2024-2025 school year and shall continue to receive this award until the student completes the school’s terminal grade or until the student leaves the school, whichever comes first.

quote:

Students that were deemed eligible for LA GATOR based on their income and chose to participate in the program will be able to continue participation in following years as current LA GATOR participants are eligible for the program. However, account funding amounts are based on other factors including family income, so the student’s account funding amount may change.

Potentially, but your desired school also has to be a participating member. I wouldn't change my kid's school just because some other school participated (if ours didn't).

They haven't published a list of participating schools, so who knows if any legitimately good schools are even going to? I know there is a waiting list at my kid's school, so I doubt they will.

If you heard all the talking before, people were saying this was going to decimate the public school system but now I'm doubting if 5% of kids even participate in this.

Why do you say that?

Louisiana will never be able to afford it. The only kids who will ever benefit are the ones that were on vouchers. They've basically rebranded the voucher program.

Every student that "qualifies" for disability that is removed from a public school reduces the need for para professionals in the classrooms ($$) to prevent them from hitting themselves in the head, etc. Public schools of course won't want that, because they love the state and federal dollars that flow in with that student, but they're not generally equipped to actually do any good for those kids anyway.

Empower school boards, school administration, teachers to get behavior problems out of the classroom. This means cutting red tape required to discipline a kid, changing funding formulae that deters school admin from removing problem kids that aren't there to learn, and allowing teachers to discipline again (ex. teachers can no longer threaten to take away recess for an elementary student for example)

The idea that school boards and school administrations believe in that model and want it is plain fantasy.

All of the restrictions and leftist push that has negatively impacted education is brought by the school boards and leftist school administrators.
