Check the solenoid in the back. You should always hear a "clank" sound when switching to crushed. (On some units crush is default and you hear the clank when going the other way) you may not hear the shift (clank) until you active the auger.
If you don't hear that clank your solenoid is bad, if you do hear that clank, your ice bin is bad.
It's easier to buy a new one from amazon than to fool with fixing the old one and it only cost $20 more.

Before buying a kenmore, find out who makes it.
I told a friend to avoid LG fridges at all costs. I forgot to tell him many Kenmore fridges are LG.
Kenmore don't make appliances, they badge them.
Every kenmore has a model number that starts with three digits followed by a decimal. The digits say who makes it.

Depends on which of the nine icemaker types you are talking about. Some are easy, some will make you curse the nation of Korea.

None of the fridges that have bottom freezers and icemaker in the fridge, in units have good icemakers.
Some are near impossible to fix. Heater kits, silicone, mastic, it's all jerry rigs to fix a design flaw.
I wouldn't get a bottom freezer just because they are more prone to icing over.
The ice maker issue just exasperates it.
Standard sxs have less issues.
Dual evap units will give more control but will not last long.
He best units are the ones no one likes. The old top freezer.
Simple and good interior flow.
Everyone needing ice and water dispensers changed the style of fridge and the reliability.
The old fridge where you dug for ice, I bet it never had issues.
Now you get your ice in your cup, but at what cost?

quote:Happened with our 7 year old Whirlpool. Hyper expensive to replace. Instead bought a new Frigidaire.
Bought a Kenmore Elite 3 years ago from Sears. Compressor went out 5 days ago.
Moral of story - Maybe replacing fridges every 3-7 years is new normal? If so, go for best price?

The new Yeti refrigerator is getting rave reviews

I've known technicians that went to school just to repair Samsung icemakers and still have trouble getting them to work reliably. It's a flaw in the design of some French door Samsung refrigerators, they use the icemaker itself to act as an evaporator in the ice box area. This design causes excessive moisture in this area and will eventually stop the icemaker over and over again.

Stay away from the side by side refrigerators with the ice maker in the fridge.
I have a nine year old Frigidaire side by side with the ice maker in the freezer. The ice make is my only complaint. It dribbles water down the inside of the back panel that eventually freezes next to the fan. The ice damn always builds up to the point it stops the fan but not before creating a huge racket. Usually, at 3am. Other than that it's fine.

I know my LG has been a total piece of shite. I do agree that appliances seem to be made more cheaply than they used to.

Napoleon what's the difficulty level of replacing the ice maker on one of these? I haven't YouTube'd it yet. Damn thing is always broken.

Posted on 6/23/19 at 12:44 pm to fallguy_1978
Not hard at all. It's a side by side. Your icemaker is in the freezer where it belongs not in the fridge.
Posted on 6/23/19 at 12:45 pm to Napoleon
It's the crappy kind with the rotating ice tray. It's freezing over and not dropping the ice so water runs all down the side of the freezer when it refills it.

My ice maker in my Samsung quit working. Did the You Tube thing, but someone said check your water filter. Even though it wasn't time to change it was clogged. Changed it and everything went back to normal. $45

I have an old GE from the late 50's in my garage chilling beers
Been in our family since it was first purchased and still runs great.

I hope not.
I have a GE older than most of you in my kitchen and a GE from the 1950's in my garage. Both run great!

Miele or Thermador if you have no budget restrictions. For 3k that Frigidaire side by side is pretty impressive if you’ve got the space to house it. Whirlpool Gold is the overall economy choice
