He hired a bunch of auto tech types and started production in an old auto factory in Detroit. Brought in watch guys from Switzerland to train them how to do it. He may have since sold the company.

No.
The rights to the original Shinola name was purchased. The original Shinola had been out of business for some time when Tom Kartsotis brought it back from the dead and turned it into a watch company.
