Keto is great but it can take 6 months to start feeling optimal using fat as your primary fuel source. You may also find that you are fine adding in starches (rice and potatoes). Watch “The Perfect Human Diet” documentary. Read up on the “Whole 30” and get a good Paleo cookbook. Being Keto or Paleo does not entail a diet with zero veggies and only butter, fat and oil. Eat the crap out of your veggies and buy high quality meat, poiultry and seafood. I posted some supplements that will improve your lipid profile in conjunction with a whole foods diet in the first thread you posted. If you are drinking a lot even just on the weekends, you need to stop and let your body heal. If your liver is not fiunctioning optimally, start taking TUDCA. Best of luck, I know it can be scary, I was there.

Your body was designed to process carbs.

not processed carbs. It was designed to handle real whole food carbs from fruits and veggies. Starchy carbs did not come around to much later. But your body can usually handle non processed carbs like potatoes and natural brown rice pretty easily.

But he is trying to get his cholesterol ratios in order and the best way to do that is to limit carbs at first.

Start by listening to all of the Ketotalk.com podcasts. One of the hosts is a closeted gay who can be irritating but don't let that stop you from listening to the other guy, Dr. Adam Nally. He has been treating patients in his medical practice with the keto diet for 10 years. He can give you all of the info on how LDL particles can differ in morphology (size and shape) and atherogenicity (their propensity to cause heart disease). There have been a couple ignorant posts about eating fatty steaks and drinking oil. These people are ignorant, even if they are cardiologists. They are trapped in a paradigm that was created by statin pushing drug companies. If you want to read a massive volume that puts the DASH diet (the ineffective diet pushed by the medical community) on its head, read this book:

Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes

It is a very long book. The audiobook is 26 hours. If you want a more concise explanation read:

The Art and Science of Low Carb Living by Phinney and Volek

Phinney and Volek also have several lectures on youtube that can be helpful.

During the weight loss phase, after you have enetered into to ketosis, they recommend a lower daily fat goal than any other variety of keto. A great Facebook group based on this philosophy is the Ketogenic Dieters group. Make sure to read their sticky note before commenting because they will run you in a heartbeat.

Their recipe blog has numerous offerings at:

Ketogenic Dieters Recipe Blog

If you want everything laid out for your first 2 weeks then go to dietdoctor.com and take the low carb challenge. This page also explains all of the principles.

https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb

There are way too many resources to list and there will be some conflicting recommendations. Ketogenic dieters recommended 140 grams of protein, 86 grams of fat and 20 grams of carbs for my height of 5'9". This is hard to pull off until you get into ketosis. I felt very hungry. The keto doc, Adam Nally, will recommend less protein (120 grams) and much more fat (140 grams). I kept the protein recommendation of 140 and brought the fat up to 110. This has worked best for me. I had insulin resistance (pre-diabetes) and this has been reversed. I have lost 30 pounds while recompositioning with a Starting Strength barbell program. This program and keto has promoted me from beta to alpha. I threw my fedora in the trash.

Good luck

to ease out of the fear of fat, it's good to think about things like avocados, wild-caught salmon, krill oil, eggs, macadamia nuts, almonds, pecans, cacao, coconut oil, and olive oil. And eating those things with good carbs: lots of green leafy vegetables, moderate blackberries/raspberries and more moderate strawberries and even more moderate blueberries. Then getting your protein from wild/grass-fed sources. You have to limit protein or else you won't get/stay in ketosis.

This, except that if you are metabolically damaged pre-diabetes) like me then you must limit the berries.

Too much protein will kick you out of ketosis due to gluconeogenesis. It is a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet.

I'll preface with: ALL bodies are different...

...but this has proven to be mostly a myth. There is no evidence that moderately excessive protein intake will cause a glucose spike. You can always test it yourself with blood glucose and ketone strips.

Have you tried eating a healthy balanced diet?

I understand you are battling high cholesterol, as did I in the past. Are you skipping the balanced diet and exercise approach and going straight to attempting ketosis?

An endless supply of health information says that isn't true. The human body functions better without glucose in the blood stream. Glucose is also a feeder of cancel cells, whereas ketones kill cancer cells.

That's good to know and can be useful to many, but he's asking about high cholesterol not cancer or pre-cancer.

I disagree.
