eating a shite ton of red meat

Too much protein will kick you out of ketosis due to gluconeogenesis. It is a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet.

high quality red meat and butters and other fats that come from high quality whole food sources are the best for improving your ldl to hdl ratio and that is what overall matters.

Also cholesterol is essentially your bodies way of dealing with inflamation. Dietary cholestrol has little effect on overall numbers.

macros and quality of those macros along with other gentic factors play a much bigger role.

also a keto diet is essentially low carb/higher fat. Higher fat does not mean eating globs of red meat. That is a possibility, but all meat sources are fine. Nothing wrong with eating tons of red meat. Or you could do tons of seafood or tons of lamb or chicken, whatever. Essentially you eat meat and veggies. Really not a foreign concept and its how most non active individual should base their diet, expierementing what works for them from there eventually moving to a if it fits your macros style diet if their body can handle carbs effeciently.

so your whole post was wrong.

2.5 years of keto and my bloodwork is exemplary. Much improved from my pre-keto ways of eating.

what 777 said.

i wasn't being a dick, but there are so many resources on keto and low-carb generally.

as mentioned, reddit is a great resource. i've actually cut my red meat consumption back and try to eat only grass-fed. but that isn't a cholesterol thing, and the generally accepted advice about cholesterol is all wrong, as 777 alluded to.

to ease out of the fear of fat, it's good to think about things like avocados, wild-caught salmon, krill oil, eggs, macadamia nuts, almonds, pecans, cacao, coconut oil, and olive oil. And eating those things with good carbs: lots of green leafy vegetables, moderate blackberries/raspberries and more moderate strawberries and even more moderate blueberries. Then getting your protein from wild/grass-fed sources. You have to limit protein or else you won't get/stay in ketosis.

That's a lot different from the bacon, steak and cottage cheese diet a lot of people envision.

You need to go pretty extreme for that to matter. Protein doesn't turn into chocolate cake, as the ketogains guys examined. Anywhere from 0.8-1.2g/ lb of lean body mass will be fine.

yeah, i only mentioned it because of the way the post to which i was responding was phrased re "tons of red meat."

I have never done a blood or breath test for ketosis, and I don't count stuff much any more. I assume I'm pretty well adapted, red meat binges or no!

My problem is i haven't found grass-fed steaks i really like. I prefer Wal-Mart special (quite literally) $4.99/lb chuck-eyes to the expensive GF stuff I've tried.

I'm having some unrelated health issues I'll share somewhere later--that's the red meat reduction impetus right now.

How is venison labeled? I've got a freezer full and it's typically thought to be leaner than beef, but is it technically "wild" if hunters put out corn and feeder all through the year?

The current paradigm blames the fireman (cholesterol) for the fire (inflammation), due in large part to the fact that it is routinely observed that fireman are correlated with fires.

The establishment falsely assumes that the fireman caused the fire.

The issue boils down to correlation vs causation

Look into the work of Dr Peter Attia /Eating Academy on this topic for details. Do not have the time currently to find direct links (working enough to support my life of leisure)

if the deer aren't eating primarily from their natural food source, then my understanding is you are missing out on max omega-3s, but i have no idea how great an affect that sort of feeding would have. i have a feeling it varies widely.

I don't worry about going with grass-fed stuff. I usually just buy beef from costco. I just take a good deal of fish oil daily to help improve my omega-3 to omega-6 ratio.

Keto is the absolute truth. Doing lazy keto, more of a low carb high fat vs trying to be in ketosis, I went from 198 to 160 since July.

I may as well ask about a good fish oil(my doctor recommended this) and a good daily multivitamin. Do the fish oil pills still have that nauseating burp effect throughout the day? If so, no thanks, I'll take my chances.

And are multivitamins helpful of a waste of money? I've read things supporting both. And if I go keto, will I be lacking any vitamins/minerals I need to supplement?

Correct

High cholesterol isn't usually because of a diet high in cholesterol

Has more to do with stress hormones, lack of exercise, dramatic weight gain, even genetic factors etc

Deer is fine, don't overethink it. And yes you should take fish and/or krill oil. I suggest flameout or oxiomega from bio test and controlled labs respectively. Or ask your doctor to give you a script for the omega ethyl ester.
