you've got a point. But like everything in life there's a balance to be made. By that I mean you've got to have rules and structure in their life. But you don;t want to have such draconian rules they instantly rebel against them the first chance they get. But having said that, you also don't want ot be the "I'm more a friend than parent" type who let's their kids do whatever they want.

It is best to start very young. There seems to be a window for developing those fine motor skills.
