re: What age did you tell your children that Santa isn't real?

Yeah my parents never even told us he was real. I got everything I asked for almost every year, so couldn't have cared less whether he was real or not. To each his own. Dad said no way he was giving credit to Santa when it was his own hard earned money that paid for the gifts

That seems to just rob them of a wonderful part of childhood. But hey, they're your kids.
I get that opinion. I disagree but I get it.
Our kids are equally excited about Christmas as those who believe in Santa. And they get that excitement without the expense of us letting them believe an untruth.

Exactly.
“Santa is bringing you a hover board”
“Dad is buying you a hover board”
Pretty sure that, from a kid’s perspective, the most important part of those two sentences is at the end, not the beginning.

Kid on the bus did this to my kid when he was about 6. Came home and said he had told him Santa wasn't real and your parents buy the presents. He looked to me for answers. All I could do was look him in the eye and say "Son, that kids an idiot."

I have 6 kids and NEVER broke the news to any of them. I sincerely hope they still believe in Santa Claus.
ETA: They're all over 24 now.

I had a 12-year-old guitar student who still believed in Santa and the Easter bunny. It was sad and pathetic.
Please tell them way before then.

A 12 year old who still believes in Santa and the Easter Bunny, legitimately, is from a social and maturity standpoint far, far behind his peers. It is not a good thing. It is sad. It is getting to the point where I would be worried about long term social adjustment issues. In fact they might already be there if the 12 year old hadn't figured it out just from interacting with his peers at that point. I suspect the parents have to be over sheltering him, or he has legitimate developmental issues.

Why tell him? My son never let on that he knew. My daughter believed till she was 11. Life's a lot better when they believe, in my opinion.

My sincere apologies.

My kids both figured it out by 8 or 9.

Might as well tell them about Jesus while you're at it.
He already knows who Jesus is.

I knew when I was at least 6, maybe sooner. I "played along" until I was 10 because my parents liked doing the whole "I wonder what Santa got you!" song and dance.

When my son was 9 he did a Google search to find out.

My son is 8 and he's started asking about it. He doesn't buy the part about the flying reindeer, mainly. However, he still believes in Santa because he just can't figure out how else all the gifts end up under the tree

Let them figure it out on their own. It's one of the last little bits of magic in the Western world.
And when they do figure it out they get to be on the other side of the coin keeping the magic going.
