All these kids with iPhones these days...
Buncha spoiled kids all making over $150,000 a year.

I overheard some kids at the playground one day...they couldn't have been over 9. So they are chasing each other and the one in front says to the one behind "you're slower than an old iPhone."
It amazed me the profundity of that exchange. We've come so far that kids are insulting each other based on the processing speeds of a veritable handheld supercomputer.

My daughter and son are 8 and 9 respectively. They both got one at Christmas. It has been great! Kids are so adaptive. When they go somewhere, baseball, sleepover, etc, it is mandatory they take them. They use them so much less than you think they will. They don't sit on em all day and try to play games.
Once I dropped my dumb old schoool mentality, I was able to realize how necessary they were. I have parentals in place and I can track the kids if need be, as long as the phone is with them.
Judge your own kids for responsibility so they won't lose them, but for me it has been great.
Btw...wife n I are with ATT. To add a line for eaxh, it was $1 for eaxh phone and $10/month extra.....no brainer

Can anyone definitively state why a little kid 'needs' a cellphone?
I mean, most kids in the USA today are never out of visual range of some adult, whether that be a parent/relative, a teacher, or a coach of some sort.
Way back when, it was common for kids to (GASP!) spend time outside, out of visual/audio range of their parents, and for those kids to actually be ON THEIR OWN (the horror!) and play independtly without adult supervision.
IKR. Our parents must have hated us and wanted us to die at the hands of sexual predators or from head injuries by riding our bikes everywhere without helmets and without them watching our every move.
IMO, kids don't need any screens at all. Screen time for the growing brain, is like junk food for the growing body. OK in moderation, but bad in excess.
I think kids learn valuable problem solving skills and gain confidence by operating outside of their percieved safety umbrella of mama's watchful gaze.
What is a cellphone nowadays but a way for other people to keep track of us, an electronic dog leash of sorts? Or more accurately, an electronic nanny/mama?
<-- gave up 'smartphone' because it was a huge expense and waste of time - traded out for Nokia candy-bar trac-phone.
Much money saved, and much more time spent in the real world, where cool shite actually happens, and believe it or not, I actually do things and get shite done thus setting a decent example for my kids.
What value does the tiny screen really add to a kid's life?
Look up.

Mine won't have them until age 14 or when they begin high school.

It's a lot earlier than when my kids were at home. I think we let each of them have a cell during their junior year of HS back then. Shortly after that, their mother left all of us and I found them handy in keeping up with each kid while I worked. Was working some long hours at the time due to contracts. As soon as the contracts dropped off, I reverted to just my day job so I could spend time at home with them.
Times have definitely changed. Now, I am debating the need to even have a land line. There is a piece of hardware that can be connected to the cable modem to monitor the house alarm. Thing will pay for itself in about six months.
