I found myself on the unemployment line for the first and only time in my life back in 2020. The folks calling me now for work are the same ones who ghosted me back then.

No severance packages were offered in the early 1980s when I was suddenly out of work. Yes, it sucked, more the mental aspect than the financial one

The US is still the low cost producer of these basic/intermediate products with all of the NGL's from wet natural gas coming out of South Texas and the Permian Basin and the main hub for NGL's being Mont Belvieu, TX.

The only way they are competitive is with their governments heavily subsidizing them and going into bigtime debt like China has.

The Aberdeen plant must have used VCM from Lake Chuck and the VCM plant used Chlorine from Lake Chuck. Over a decade ago, Westlake closed a PVC pipe plant in Mississippi, at or near Aberdeen and consolidated it with the Wichita, TX plant.

Is Westlake Polymers the same Company as or a subsidiary of Westlake Chemical?
Layoffs are never a good thing, worse during this time of year. I hope those affected can find employment in the very near future.

Thanks. I was more familiar with the name Westlake Polymers and thought there might be a connection with the two.

Gov subsidies or not, theyre still undercutting the US chemical market. The US is not the low cost producer anymore

A client has 60% of its generic pesticides and herbicides sales to CHINA. All made in the USA, mostly in TN. China cannot compete even when off patent.

In petrochemicals, China is not that big a competitor. Yes the US is and why so much foreign investment even before Trump was in office.

Japan has positioned itself as a producer of very high purity chemicals for semiconductor'electronics industry, even though Exxon Chemicals, Baton Rouge is the big boy in high purity IPA, aka isopropyl alcohol production

Tariffs are hurting catalyst manufacturing with supplies. Axens, Haldor Topsoe, etc... are taking advantage

It was tough to hear about those people at styrene. I didn't know many of the operators but I know all of the lab techs. I'm glad Mahesh retired before all of this happened.

Comments like this low key trigger me. I can just see you driving that Corolla to your “office” job. I guess I would be mad to if folks with little to no schooling made double what I
Did :). I would love to know what you do for a living.
