WEST BATON ROUGE - During a Thursday night meeting, the West Baton Rouge Council will introduce a resolution supporting the construction of a new bridge connecting LA 1 and LA 415.
The proposed three-mile connector bridge was originally part of the 1960 West Baton Rouge master plan, but it was never fulfilled. The traffic congestion drivers see across the Intracoastal Canal is common, backups and delays are usual sights both day and night. Constructing a new bridge would cost around $133 million.
WBR President Riley Berthelot said, the connector could be a toll bridge, which would cover some of the costs. The parish is also hoping for federal or state funding to assist the effort. The project is expected to be a four-lane bridge.
Berthelot said if they can start with two lanes, additions can be made later. Tonight's resolution supports a request made by the Capital Outlay Program to construct the connector bridge. Berthelot said if work started now, it would still take 8-10 years to complete.

yes, yes let's design/build something that doesn't meet current capacity, let alone future growth, in hopes that we will redo it later. morons

Meanwhile a few miles up river

Any new crossing will help but why not just build it 4 or 6 lanes now knstad if having to pay significantly more later to widen it?

It’s been in their plan for 58 years and still no progress?

That Audubon bridge was the biggest waste of money ever.

This is such bullshite. It doesn’t take 8-10 years in other states. It’s not even a MS River bride we’re talking about.

That's what consistent, organized lobbying can do for ya. It took about 50 years for that to happen.

More than twice as long as it took us to defeat the Nazis.

I'm not sure how that's going to help I-10 traffic headed into Baton Rouge. Sounds like this is a new bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). I guess it would divert any westbound traffic away from the current ICW bridge, but they aren't the usual cause of the backup anyway.
Edit: and it sounds like that's what it is, because that's what it is. Ha. Should have looked at the link before commenting.

There is quite a bit of westbound traffic that gets caught in that cluster frick daily. It will remove them from the equation, and give a welcome alternative route to the 190 bridge during peak traffic times. But it needs to be built as a 4 lane, anything less would almost be a waste.

I don't doubt it, but the cause of the "cluster frick" is traffic heading east...which this doesn't do a whole lot to alleviate. Though, any little bit will help, I guess.

It’s to help with the LA1 traffic over the canal.

The current LA1 Intracostal bridge received a “F” in structural condition. If this bridge is shut down it would cripple the entire region traffic wise. It has more to do with this than alleviating I10 traffic.

It would definitely help the people trying to get from south west Baton Rouge to north west Baton Rouge parish. They could bypass all the traffic trying to enter the MSRB all together. This will alleviate some northbound traffic on LA1. Which can back up from the MSRB to Brusly high.

So it was supposed to happen in 1960 but still waiting to complete it

no it wasn't. It was never built to alleviate traffic. It was built to provide an alternative to the St. Francisville Ferry and as a stimulus to economic development for that region. To that extent its been successful.
