Weather terminology is getting ridiculous.

Seems like they find words to put fear into people and make weather systems seem more intense. Cold fronts are now "polar vortex" and all tropical developments are referred to as "tropical cyclones". Yes, technically they are all cyclones, but that was reserved to distinguish systems that developed in the south Pacific and Indian oceans. Typhoon is used for the Northwest Pacific. Hurricane is used for the Atlantic. Now we don't hear tropical depression or tropical storm anymore because cyclone sounds so much scarier.

lol wut?
The literal definition of a tropical system that reaches “storm” status is a “cyclone.”

All tropical storms
They are all the same thing: tropical storms. But they are known by different names in different locations.

It’s not so much the media fear mongering as it is the NHC not using the correct term for the last 50 years.
quote:
A “tropical cyclone” is a generic term used by meteorologists.
Pretty hard to consider it “fear mongering” When it’s considered a “generic” term.

Weather Channel tried to be smart naming Winter mid latatude cyclones. Nobody remembers winter storm antesha from 2010 bitch ! Weather Channel has a hard on for attention. Most of those whores don’t have a degree in meteorology .

Why did they abandon Alberta Clipper? You never hear that one anymore.

Its pretty funny watching all these journalists that know the jig is up and no one respects them anymore running around the Florida beaches as its sunny outside with super huge solid 2 foot waves of terror trying to prove to us this is the worst hurricane season on record
What a bunch of morons.
What a bunch of morons.

Remember Hurricane Sandy? They started calling it "Superstorm Sandy", because no lowly hurricane can mess up East coast Yankees that badly, only dumb rednecks in the South. No, if a storm hits them that hard, then it must have been a SUPERSTORM.

The Monsoon Gyre was the newest one for me earlier this year.

That, and because it was no longer a hurricane when it made landfall.
Post Tropical Storm Sandy didn't sound terrifying enough.

Up vote because I generally agree with your point, but this doesn't seem to me a particularly new phenomenon. Weather Armageddon Hype has been with us since at least 2005.
To me, one of the most egregious examples is the naming of winter storms as tho' they were hurricanes. Please.

Partly Sunny or Partly Cloudy today?

I blame the Weather Channel for glorifying the destruction and give every damn storm a name.

I want to return to the days when "Witches tit, or some derivative of, was used to describe the degree of cold.
Speaking of the devil, how many times a year does Stephanie Abrams change the size of those silicone bags? She was way more of a spectacle when she had the ginormous chest cannons.
ETA: Why are the gays down voting tit talk? It really doesn't concern them.
