Weather Experts: what does the cold winter mean for hurricane season?

Does is lessen the potential for a big season?
No impact?
I figured with the cold temperatures it might cool the gulf off enough to, hopefully, slow down some bad storms.

No weather expert but my hunch is that it has very little effect

Yea, probably my wishful thinking. Last year the news kept saying unusually warm water temps were one of the main reasons. I was just thinking maybe this will cool the water down.

Here are sea surface temps for Jan 2017 and Jan 2018. Look pretty similar to me. I have no idea what affect January SSTs might have on hurricane season however.

It does show the cold air makes little difference except right at the coast. Those giant heat sinks laugh at artic cold snaps.

Thats whats I figured. Shallow coastal areas are affected but the places where the storms are born and raised are not. And the coastal areas will warm right back up in the summer.

I’m no expert, it I would have to guess all this cold weather could result in a COLD ARCTIC HURRICANE! The likes no one has ever seen before.

Incorrect my friend. There have been at least three snow hurricanes recorded. The 1804 snow hurricane being the worst and Hurricane Sandy being the most recent.
NOLA probably should prepare itself for 3-5 feet of snow. However, we know the snow pumps won't be operational at the time of landfall.
