Im not trying to sound unsympathetic to the people involved. However I strongly believe these recent storm/s are being exaggerated for ratings. Micheal is a Cat 4 close to a 5 at sustained winds of 155 mph. Yet not one gauge has read over 75-80 sustained. Few gust around 120s. Florence was no where near what they were reporting. lots of rain Non of those weather reports would have been anywhere near Cameron during Rita. It had a 18 ft surge. But they say this is a stronger storm. I question if that is true. What do the OTers say

I just saw on a live stream a good amount of what was wooded land now looks like a field of toothpicks. So I think its pretty bad

Also, the 145 mph winds aren't ground level winds.

Have you watched any of the streams from people on the ground? shite doesn't seem to be exaggerated to me.

I'm directly in the eye. I just took the garbage out. It's exaggerated.

OT says you should run out there with a gauge and measure the 150 mph winds yourself.

You are being a tidbit obsessive if this bothers you.

They definitely overhype things. Doesn’t mean the storm isn’t bad, but does lead people in the future to take all the warnings and threats with a grain of salt and stay put ala Katrina.

you certainly aren't wrong, and it's been best shown by the videos of them making it appear they are in deep water but it's really only an inch or 2 deep.

However, they emphasized throughout Florence coverage that it would only be a rain event, which it def was.

100% agree. But it's not just for ratings. The global warming community has really taken it on the chin lately. It was rumored that last winter they held a meeting in Aspen where they planned this new strategy. I'll try to find the link but you are very bright to have noticed this on your own.

Was watching a bit ago and couldn’t help but wonder what Jim and Stephanie might be up to while covering this storm.

I’d rather it be slightly exaggerated than have it reported “as is” and watch people literally die because of really bad hot takes.

Gusts in the mid 80's near PCB. This isn't even a Cat 2. It is Cat 1 based on the windspeeds I see on TWC. It'll do a lot of damage no doubt but Cantore and company exaggerating windspeeds, pretending to be blown around like in Harvey is disgusting.

This BS is the number one reason why people don't evacuate. A real Cat 4 with sustained winds of 140 would really create destruction.

These guys claiming a Cat 4 with 80mph winds will make people comfortable with staying behind after they see just downed trees, power lines and awnings in a "Cat 4".

F TWC. Cantore and Abrams can suck it.
