quote:

II veterans Bob Passanisi, 94, and Gilbert Howland, 96, commemorated the 75th anniversary of the 5307th Composite Unit's (Provisional) mission in the China Burma India theater with a wreath-laying ceremony at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC on May 8. Nicknamed "Merrill's Marauders" after their commander, Brig. Gen. Frank D. Merrill, the 5307th were the first American troops to fight the Japanese on land in Asia. Former Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall said the Marauders' mission against “large numbers of the enemy with few resources was unmatched in any theater.”

I am retired military. Not sure I could carry these guys jockstraps. Definitely our greatest generation. Saddened to know they are almost all gone.

The Merrills Marauders movie was pretty good. If that was a decent representation, then damn.

No kidding. There were men who volunteered, were deemed unfit for service, and committed suicide due to the perceived shame.

I am not convinced that my generation wouldn't dare answer the call in the same manner if a Pearl Harbor style event happened.

Something like 25% of draftees didn't pass the physical, usually due to being underweight or not having enough teeth. Growing up during the Depression took its toll. One thing that was an automatic disqualifier was having a ruptured eardrum. It made you susceptible to poison gas, and gas masks of the time didn't cover the ears.

And because of their contributions they may not have to answer such a call. The best way to honor them is Vigilance.

You might can. In fact, depending on the nature of your service, maybe they can't carry yours.

How do we know they weren't support personnel? How do we know they fired one single round? I mean about 40% of all jobs were rear echelon and only about 14% were infantry. About 16 million served during the war and less than 1 million saw actual combat.

Maybe their long life spans have to do with not developing ptsd related psychological and physiological ailments.

I don't know their personal histories but the likelihood they saw combat at all is pretty low. Maybe the ones who actually did the fighting were killed in combat or killed by the effects of it later in life.

Consider the possibility "they look great for their age" because they didn't do any actual fighting.

I am proud to say that my Uncle was Battalion Sargent Major of the Marauders. I also met these two gentlemen at the WWII museum in New Orleans at the last Marauders reunion. Just being around these guys was an honor.

You seem like a miserable fricking C.Unt. Why not just honor these men who volunteered or were drafted? If they served chow, does that make them any less honorable? If they kept track of stocks of ordinance does that make their service any less valuable? frick off.
