My buddy's wife has their SUV. With under 75k on the odometer it has required major repairs twice, each time with a big price-tag.
They have the quality of a Chrysler with the parts cost of a Rolls Royce and nobody will work on them so you have to go to the dealership.

I don't get why people buy them. Get a Lexus. They're safe, ultra-reliable, better powered than a Volvo, and they don't require some special $500 gold-dipped Allen wrench to replace the headlights.

Which Volvos are you looking at? There are a few model/year cars to avoid.
The XC90's are fantastic. Built on a ford platform, parts are cheap and you can buy them at autozone. Avoid any and all V8 XC90 from 2005 and ALL T6 XC90's. The early 4.4 V8 had a problem with the cam shaft bearing holding moister. When it went it would take out the valve train. The T6 used a GM transmission that was complete dogshit.
The bevel gear on some of the AWD sedans can require a little attention but it's simple.
Pretty much everything post 06 is pretty solid, especially the FWD 3.2 XC90's.
Huge volvo fan here, never had a single issue with any of them. My runners drive an xc90 with over a quarter million miles on the clock without so much as an AC recharge.

Wrong. The XC90 is made in Torslanda, Sweden, the XC60 in Ghent, Belgium.
The only car they make in China and sell in the US is the S60 Inscription.
And they're opening a plant in South Carolina to make other cars.

Audi over Volvo all day.
I looked at Volvo very hard before ultimately choosing an Audi. The Volvos seemed to wear more and the repair estimates I checked in were about 30% more than the VW/Audi estimates.

'08 XC90 V8 AWD w/ about 80k miles. Had good luck with ours and its fun to drive. Couple of odd repairs here and there. Ignition went out and had one brand new battery go bad from the dealer. The new ones look awesome w/ whatever trim this is:

Used to work at a Volvo dealer. Some of their later stuff is pretty solid but the stuff from around 10 years ago or so can be a crap shoot. Some XC90 and S80 models used a GM built transmission that's pretty much guaranteed to fail. Saw one XC90 that was on it's 3rd. Seen a lot of cars with sunroof issues. Volvo has some of the most comfy seats in the industry. Also, it seems they've a new lifetime warranty. LINK

This is true. We got my daughter a S60 and it has been pretty solid except for the sunroof.

Volvo cars go thru a lot of tires. Alot! And oil changes with their scheduled maintenance can be close to $500 each time. I advise people to stay away from volvo. Very expensive to fix their many problems.

shite... a good buddy's wife drive an XC90 13" and they don't pay for maintenance/oil changes. well at least for the length of the note i think. they are almost done paying for it now though.

It's a bitch trying to find a place to work on them. My sister had one and hated it. All sorts of electrical issues. I'm not going to bad mouth the brand because of that one but I don't have a good taste in my mouth from it.

06 xc90 with about 120k. Mostly routine maintenance, nothing too major. Interior is crap and falling apart. I also agree that it eats tires.

We had a 1998 V70 XC, and it was a complete lemon. My wife was so in love with having a Volvo and bragged on that car all the time despite the fact it was CONSTANTLY in the shop. That being said, we had a local mechanic who works on nothing but Volvos (his name is actually Gary Volvo) and is a complete nerd about them. He claims that the 1998 was a problem year for the XC (being the first year) and that they improved as the model developed. That being said, I wasn't sorry to get rid of the thing.
Now my wife has an Acura RDX, and she actually understands what a dependable car is like to drive.
Also: if you don't have a Volvo dealer nearby with the satellite uplink thing, then getting them worked on can be a real pain. Our independent mechanic would have to occasionally take ours to Tulsa to do certain things on it. Was a real pain.
