But Biden was overspending into the military-industrial complex and Trump wants to cut back

so explain the logic or lack thereof

China’s rapid military buildup has left the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) poised to overtake the U.S. Navy in several measures of maritime might more quickly than sometimes assumed. If China continues to expand its fleet at the current pace and the United States does not revitalize its shipbuilding industry, China will grow increasingly likely to emerge victorious from interstate war, especially a prolonged great power war. The result is a China that will grow more confident projecting power, threatening its less powerful neighbors, and disregarding U.S. efforts to deter such behavior.

The decline of U.S. naval dominance will be difficult to reverse. The process has spanned decades and rests on slow-moving economic and industrial trends. But the United States can still maintain superiority by investing in smaller surface combatants like corvettes, frigates, and unmanned naval systems paired with alternative platforms like aircraft or ground-based missile launchers; deepening its partnerships with Pacific nations like Japan and South Korea; and investing more in its domestic shipbuilding industry—particularly the highly specialized submarine industrial base.

It's not how much we are spending necessarily but how we spend it,.we have too many flag officers and a bloated bureaucracy for example.

They are even further behind in terms of crewing their ships. They don’t know how to pilot the ships they have, and their demographic problems don’t help.

The Chinese are building a modern navy at a frightening rate,

The Chinese will need about 500 modern landing craft to invade Taiwan. These things carry drones, helicopters, and APCs. And about 200 troops plus gear and supplies for 5-7 days of fighting for said troops.

They came out with the first class of them 6 or 8 years ago. I think they built maybe 10? And they performed so poorly that they canceled the whole program. And started again with a new design. They just launched the first one this year. And it's in sea trials. They're gonna launch maybe 2 or 3 more this year. And then go back and start making revisions before they can go into serial production.

It will then take 12-15 years to build and ourfit the fleet of 500. Plus train the men and officers on how to handle them and use all the systems.

They're a long way from being able to launch an amphibious assault on Taiwan

Isn't there a ship yard that builds ships for the US government in Alabama? I think there is one in Lockport, La.

China is a much bigger country.. Does that play a factor?

Our Navy could probably, hell, likely take on every other Navy in the world combined and whip their arse.

China has in recent weeks staged military drills off Australia and Vietnam, sending pointed warnings near and far. Neither was a full-fledged exercise. But taken together, China’s recent shows of force, experts said, conveyed a message: the region must not ignore Beijing’s power and claims.

Three Chinese naval ships, including a cruiser with 112 missile tubes, showed up in the waters near Australia this month, only announcing plans to fire artillery for practice after the exercise had started. A few days later, on Monday, Chinese forces held live-fire drills in the Gulf of Tonkin, after Vietnam pressed its territorial claims in the gulf. Meanwhile, Chinese military aircraft buzz the skies near Taiwan almost daily.

It would take decades to rebuild our industrial capability to be able to build even half the ships the Chinese are pumping out. And it’s not just the lack of ship builders in the US, it’s the gutting of industries like steel that simply don’t exist any longer in the US on a scale necessary to support a large ship building industry. And you don’t just suddenly start up a shipbuilding industry overnight. It requires a work force of welders and machinists, not to mention electricians, plumbers, mechanics, etc to go either them. And right now we don’t even have enough of these skilled trades to meet needs today.

This is a huge problem. If a big war on the Pacific kicks off, we’re fricked from a naval standpoint.

Well we’ve got a war in Europe just getting started with an aggressive authoritarian. Looks like history is repeating itself in the east now too. Wonder where the modern Pearl Harbor will be.
