I mean, come on, he does. He just doesn't want to give Brooks anything.

Exactly. Brooks is trying to get him to say something contrary to his police report or something that identifies someone who doesn't look like Brooks. He's not taking the bait. This kid is smarter than Brooks.

Screw that. Put him in gen pop.
So he can manipulate people and practice his psychopathy? You aren’t going to make him anxious or live in fear. This guy thrives in that environment. He’s defending himself in a murder trial where he faces death.
The best thing for him is to lock him in a room where he can’t manipulate and intimidate anyone. No books. No TV. 4 walls and silence. He can yell and scream all he wants and no one will hear it. When that fact sinks in then he will feel the punishment he deserves.

I'm going to be accused of white knighting for Brooks again when I say this but this really is unfair to Brooks here. This kid almost certainly remembers what he said but since his statement at the time conflicts with Brooks actual description at the time he is saying he doesn't recall. That's a shitty thing to do and shouldn't happen to any defendant, no matter how guilty that defendant actually is.

Not to 'ummm... akschully...' you
But Wisconsin doesn't have the death sentence... life in prison is his max penalty

While that may be true, Brooks could also just shut down the questioning.
He continues to ask questions of people who aren't helping his case. He's the dumbass that's literally just reading down the witness statements and taking what they said and asking it as a question.

Bull fricking shite. His statement at the time is a matter of record. Memory a year later is wholly unreliable.

I disagree. The lawyers watching have said he can refresh the witness' memory by reading from the report. He just doesn't know how to do that and which questions to ask because he's not a lawyer. Even an incompetent defense attorney would know to do that and avoid this issue.
ETA: not only that, Brooks is following a line of questioning trying to imply the witness is unreliable because he remembers it as a shooting. It's entirely irrelevant because detectives have already testified to shooting at the vehicle, which is why he would've heard gunshots.

Not going to accuse you of white knighting for him...
Just gonna say that it's on Brooks to know what the witness is going to say on the stand and call those he knows he'll get honest & beneficial testimony
His public defender would've known this
ETA: the public defender would also know how to properly impeach an uncooperative witness

Now Brooks is mad at the judge for allowing him to ask bad questions

He can see the strategery of the prosecution...
"Proving you did what you are on video doing" isn't a deep plot to unwind.

He's complaining about the state not cross examining his witnesses

I understand that. I am saying, personally, I think he remembers and is just not giving Brooks anything because his statement at the time is conflicting. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable so I'm 100% certain he actually saw Brooks driving but since what he thought he saw at the time doesn't match Brooks actual appearance he no longer recalls. Others can disagree with me that's fine and I may be wrong. That's just how I see it.
