Most of the girls jumped rope when we were kids.
We almost always had a long jump competition going during recess.

That one really tiny kid always had a role to play. It was bullying but we all took it in different ways.

The one thing that I never remember in elementary school (sans one incident) was race. Those were just the kids in school. Elementary was 60/40 white/black for me. No Asians or Latinos.

I only remember one race related incident in elementary school. A black kid in 4th grade was always trouble. Also had a black teacher in that class. He almost always has his desk turned and beside the teacher.

One day Willie reached over to the teachers desk and grabbed the white out without notice. Soon after, Willie stood up with his now white penis telling the class to look he was now white.

Other than that ?? we just all played and got along.

*Reuben was the man child that you had to bounce the kick ball two or it was an automatic home run. He happened to be black.

I mean it isn’t like stopping these has slowed violence down. Now kids just go shoot people.
When were you an elementary school baw? Violence is almost certainly drastically lower than when you were.

We had a version of dodgeball called war. When you got hit with a ball, you had to fall where you were hit, man down. Each team had two medics that could go and get fallen soldiers and escort them to the back of the gym where they could touch the wall mat and be "healed" and get back in.

It was pandemonium. People all over the floor acting like they lost limbs, running human shield tactics for your medic as the other team tried to zero them out. Great times.

Damn. I remember playing that game into high school during lunch. Might of been more intense haha. Sweating your arse off in a button down and slacks, then having to go sit though French class soaking wet.

Bobbling was such cheating, but it was fun.

We also played softball at lunch sometimes. I remember one day I was pitching, and the biggest kid in our 6th grade class came up to bat, Michael Daughtery.

I tossed in a nice pitch and he hit a line drive right into my left eye. He hit it so hard, I didn't even have a chance to get my glove up.

Eye swelled shut in 10 seconds.

Fun times.

Heathens. When I took over courts, I stripped it down to its purist rules. Nobody could play without the bullshite. I never lost

Many of the same mentioned in this thread plus a few others:

3 flags up: one person would be the the QB and the rest of the people would group together about 20 yards away. The QB would throw the ball in the air, everyone would try to out jump each other for the ball. 1st person with 3 catches, flags, would become qb

Nookem: it was played on volleyball court, but you would throw over and catch. You couldn't take a step once you caught and could pass two times after the catch before throwing back over. My friends and I dominated this game, diving for ball and throwing to each other mid Jump to get over the net

6 pages in and I don't see this one...

It must have been be a hood game or something that white folks didn't play...

but we used to play "Hide and Go Get It" with the neighborhood girls. The game was the girls would hide from the boys and whichever boy found a girl, she would have to kiss him.

I thought it was pretty well accepted that a bouncing kickball increased the risk of a home run if the kicker caught it right during the bounce.

When walking down the hall in our single file lines we would say that if you step on a line then you love the devil.

Always was a fan of the dodgeball variants.

Scatter dodge: free for all, two or three steps allowed with the ball. You are out until the person who hit you gets hit out. Winner takes all.

Mash: two sides. If someone catches a ball then an out person comes back in for your team. Win by getting everyone out.

Three pin dodge: same principle as Mash, but each team has three bowling pins on the back line. You win by getting everyone on the other side out or knocking down all three pins.

Capture the flag: two sides like Mash, but each side has a flag on the back line. Everyone has flag football flags on. You win by getting everyone out or someone crosses the line and steals the main flag without getting hit or losing a flag.

Edit to add: someone else’s post reminded me of the version with the medics. We may have called it war. Can’t remember, it’s been decades. All versions were a pretty clever way to wear a bunch of kids out in 30 minutes so they’d behave.

My wife and I were laughing about this last week. We had a realllllly fat girl in my school and when her name was called everyone would freak out. You knew she was gonna blow you up.

My kid is currently 5 and I’m sure someone would be counseling if that happened.
