The movement is the heart of the watch. Sure, there's variation in materials used and quality (with a screw down crown being something that drives cost) but the difference in quality certainly doesn't justify the price people pay for Tag Heuer, especially for the many calibres that use this same movement.

Tag is basically the cheapest price point for what some consider to be a "luxury watch". I like some of their models, but you can do better if you increase the price range a bit.

It's the same price, same 40mm case, same movement, same materials....FINALLY a thread where it's applicable, then I read further and he already has a black faced watch...dammit.

ETA: I'm probably damn close to 1000 straight days of wearing my Stowa.

Anyone have any experience with Farer watches?

What you have here is a basic mainly Chinese parts micro-brand. It is probably over-priced by about 35% or so compared to the best values at this quality level.

The ETA 2824-2 is a nice solid movement, this one has little extra finishing and a rather plain signed rotor. The movement is the standard grade (the lowest of the 4 ETA grades) and you can expect it to be around +/- 10 seconds a daily variance but the positional error and isochronism will be pretty high. All in all a solid movement but certainly nothing special, sort of the bottom of the barrel Swiss automatic movement.

This is the type of watch you buy because you really like it better than anything in the price range, resell will be weak as well.

The 39.5mm size will wear fairly large since it is an all dial watch.

In the end I kinda like them and I like the little detail of the bronze crown, but be aware it will patina, but you can reverse the patina if you like.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of tag. Not a watch I even really want to buy, assuming a price is no object scenario. Just from what I understand the "it's the same movement" as a watch cheaper is a bit misleading. There can be differences in material with the movement itself, even if it does have the same movement design. At least from what I have read, if I understand correctly.

Don’t buy a fricking Tag.

Depends on the Tag, Tags have a bad rep with a lot of people but they make some of the greatest technical Haute Horlogerie piece in all of watchdom. That said I am not a fan of most of their catalog but I have always had a Monaco of some description in my collection. It truely is one of the classic watches.

Just because it has the same movement I don't think means that it is made with the same materials/quality. I think at least from what I have picked up in my limited experience. Could be wrong.

The ETA movements come in 4 grades with some different parts and tolerances for time keeping. This watch has a standard grade, above that you have Elabore, Top and Chronometer, the last will have been certified as a chronometer by the COSC.

ETA the end user can also modify the movement (like Tudor used to do) or can increase the level of decoration which many do.

If you want it, buy it.

30 day return policy is nice.

I have a Top, and I was under the impression that ETA stopped offering COSC to outside watch builders.

You are rather bold to not know me at all.

BTW I respect broke, while we don't really know each other we move in the same watch circles.

As a general rule they don't sell them outside the Swatch group now but they exist. A end user can easily regulate a Top movement and send it for COSC themselves. Most Tops can be regulated to COSC standard fairly easily. I can usually regulate even a standard 2824 to within +/- 8 seconds (not quite COSC) but the positional variance will still be high.

Thanks for the information. That was exactly what I was thinking of. Is which grade it is mentioned in the specs somewhere? Seems like I don't typically see it when I look at watch listings. Maybe I was seeing it and didn't know what I was looking at.

The Farer ad didn't mention it (most using a standard grade ETA won't) but the fact it is only adjusted in two positions and regulated to +/- 12 spd means it is a standard grade, which BTW is only available in their lowest spec auto movement the 2824. The 2892 and 755x movements only come in Elabore or higher.

For those that dismiss Tag Heuer you might want to watch this video to see what they are capable of. When it comes to chronographs they produce the some incredible movements at the high end.

Mikrogirrder2000

It is like while Ford makes the Fiesta it also makes the GT. They make extremely accurate double tourbillons and they made the first magnetic double tourbillons.

ETA While this Christopher Ward isn't nearly the same visually it is a watch that is very similar in quality so the price gives a little insight to what the price of the Farer should be closer to. So if it is EXACTLY what you want it might be worth the extra coin but it is a little steep. You might also look at the Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic collection to compare prices as well.
