Most felony battery laws will include language to the effect of "a battery.....with intent to commit great bodily harm." A severe, completely unprotected blow to the head checks this box.

When I watch something like this, I always look at it from the viewpoint of when I was that age.
If it is college aged kids, I don't see it as that big of a deal. They are all drunk or on who knows what. Fights happen.
If this were 35 year old men with a career and family, my reaction would be completely different... But you are right, I am glad cell phones (camera phones) were not around when I was in HS & college.

I can only speak for myself, but Im willing to bet most people find a crow hop sucker punch fairly unacceptable. Out if bounds. Personal foul. It's not at all unreasonable that very severe injury or even death result from a viscous blind side head blow.
