Not just them

Dudes in their 30s and 40s are letting timepieces collect dust for Apple watches

<- guilty

ETA: If you're thinking about getting him a heirloom watch, do that instead obviously. If you're going to get him a Seiko or Citizen (perfectly fine FWIW), he's probably prefer the Apple watch and use it for about as long.

Fossil makes durable "dressy" watches at a fair price and Citizen has a nice selection of solar/light powered watches. Price range is around $180-$240.

The Aqua Terra is a good looking watch. I just feel like for the money, I'd probably get something else.
