My ignorance on the subject of watches is profuse. I’ve always worn an athletic style watch (I coach and teach) for work/everyday, and I had a fossil watch and a Tommy bahama for everything else. Yep, it’s that bad.

I don’t want to break the bank and don’t need anything over the top. I just need a decent watch that’ll work with my wedding ring which is stainless steel. (Silver)

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Maybe some basic info on watches/watch makers? Anything to absolutely avoid? TIA

ETA: $300-500 range

Check out Tissot.

The have several different options from more classic to more sporty. I have the Le Locle automatic and like it.

Just get on Amazon and find something you like around what you want to spend. No one here is going to inherently know your style and there are literally thousands of options.

I like skagen. Low profile and cheap enough to where I don't care if I lose/break them when i get drunk at a wedding. I have never lost one but i did give one to my nephew for helping me out of a reception.

I wear this seiko daily.

Tissot, Christopher Ward, Hamilton, Seiko are all reasonable options

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. If you don't care about getting a mechanical watch and all that then maybe getting a clean looking timex is probably fine. Seiko also sells good reasonably priced quartz watches if you want to spend a little more money.

If you want to step it up to an automatic then seiko has some cheap automatics that are good for the money. I think they're called seiko 5's, and they have many different styles. I think you can get those for like $60 on amazon. If you want to spend a little more money then maybe look at Orients which is a brand of the Seiko parent company. I think they tend to run $200-$300. EDIT: Apparently the Orient Bambinos are cheaper than I remembered. They look to run $150-$200.

Orient Bambino

But really there are a ton of options out there, especially depending on what you are looking for and how much money specifically you are looking to spend.

Switching out bands is easy. Don't let a band stop you from buying a watch. Look for one of the model that comes with a metal band. Unless it has an integrated strap. Then you can't switch it out.

Ok, this may be dumb, but you’re saying automatic, quartz, and I’m seeing chronograph and watch. What’s all the difference? I’m seriously ignorant.

I found this Tissot that I liked.

If you are only going to have one watch don't get a blue face IMO. Get black or white so it goes with everything. You can dress black or white (even grey) up or down.

I agree with you. I actually have a blue face Tommy bahama with a blue and white strap. It’s beat but I like it. That one I posted it just a style I like. If it were white faced, I’d probably buy it now.

Automatic and quartz refer to the movement. Quartz runs off a battery. Automatics are powered by a spring that is wound by moving the watch (wearing it). There are also hand wound movements.

Chronographs are stopwatches. They can be quartz, automatic, or hand wound.

Go to Jomashop if you are looking at Tissot. They are a grey market dealer which means their stuff is legit but you just won't get the warranty paperwork with it. They have good deals due to this. Dealers have to move inventory to keep dealer status with certain brands so a place like Joma buys inventory from actual dealers at a volume discount and resales it. The only issue is no dealer warranty due to this. They do have an inhouse warranty, though.

It has to do with the movement, or engine, of the watch. Mechanical watches are what all watches 50+ years ago used to be. They are powered by a spring. An automatic watch is just a mechanical watch that has a counter weight in it that winds with your body's movement. A quartz watch is powered by a battery. Generally, except with rare exceptions that aren't really relevant to this discussion, quartz watches are far far far more accurate than automatic watches. A good automatic is +-10-15 seconds a day. A cheap quartz is +-small fractions of a second a day. But for reasons that I don't really feel like attempting to get into here watch collectors and such tend to find automatic and mechanical watches to be more desirable. Your more expensive watches tend to be automatic or mechanical.

When I first started liking watches, I had my eye on a blue faced Citizen chrono that looked just like that. I’m glad I didn’t get it because my tastes changed so quickly. Just look around a little bit before you jump in. I’d narrow down one of the major styles like diver, pilot, chrono, etc. and go from there.
