I take it automatic just means it runs without having to wind it or something?
Wrong. Automatic watches have a power reserve rarely lasting over 48 hours. After it quits, you will have to manually rewind or wiggle your wrist to rewind and reset it. I definitely recommend a automatic movement over a quartz. In your price range, look at Marathon, Tissot and Hamilton (in that order)
ETA: a Seiko Black Monster is a great choice and at the $500 price range, just make sure it is an automatic and not a quartz movement

I find 42mm to be fricking huge but that's what the style is these days. Mine is something like 38mm and I love it.
38mm for a dress watch, 40 for a diver in my opinion.
ETA: I have a marathon medium automatic diver and fricking love it. The metal bracelet is a must with any of the marathon divers IMO since they're so nice.
I have a seiko 5 auto also that I wear every now and then and it's a great watch as well for much cheaper.

Depends on the wrist. Mine is 7.5" and pretty flat. I personally don't like anything smaller than 42 on myself.

Watches are a very personal thing. What one person likes, another hates. Personally, I like Hamilton and Movado. I do business on Jomashop.com Last I bought on there was a Hamilton Ventura. I also bought a watch on my last cruise. A Movado "Bold". They were each $650. I'm sure you can find anything you want on Jomashop. Great people to do business with. Great prices.

Did you even read his OP? While I'm a fan that's not what he is looking for at all.
That said Seiko does make some great watches in that price range if you can get past the fact that it's not Swiss. Check out The sarb065 or other "cocktail time" variations.

Yea the seiko sarbs kick arse. 36mm - 40mm is pretty standard for a dress watch.
