I am glad you didn't listen to us/me too. That will make a nice daily watch! When you implied it wasn't gold I assumed it was a 10k GF case which was common at the time. Seeing the better picture that gold case will polish up fine, a watchmaker with a deft polishing hand can make it look new. It looks so much better in your picture.

Nice to see a watchmaker's "mark" on the inside it is so rare these days most everything now is logged onto a computer with the serial number. I can't read the one on the right that is scratched in but the one in marker is probably a watchmaker named R.P. and did the service in October of 1982.

Followup with pics when you get her fixed up, there is a fine watch hiding in there!

I’ve already ordered a nice black alligator band for it, and will bring it back next week to get it polished.

But I did decide to put it on eBay. If it sells, I’m buying me the espresso machine I’ve had my eye on. If it doesn’t sell, I have a nice watch.

I'll admit that I never knew what jewels were in a watch. I always thought it was just another word for gears. Learn something new every day.

That article points out a time only movement 3 hand movement with or without a typical single date wheel is considered fully jeweled at 17. You can have specific time only movements of certain architectures that have up to 21-22 functional jewels. Past 22 the jewels become non-functional are are merely marketing. AT's watch was made in a time that jewels were considered by much of the public to represent quality and during the time they were so expensive to produce correctly it was but many less expensive watches did not have fully jeweled movements, counts were often as low as 9. When artificial ruby jewels became cheap to mass produce a lot of watch companies started adding them and plastering it in ads and often on watch dials. This died out by the mid-70s but mechanical watches were almost dead then anyway.

The height of the crazy was when Waltham made the Centennial watch with 100 jewels:

Only 17 of them were functional and the other 83 were decorative. As you can see almost half of them were just glued into the perimeter of the movement base plate.

I could rattle on all day about jewels and how certain companies implement them but one I find cool is the Lang & Heyne Caliber VIII. It is my favorite movement ever made and L&H uses a diamond for their balance cap jewel. To me, the Caliber VIII is the most gorgeous movement and the attention to detail would take several pages to explain the only problem for me is I don't like the other side of the watch...

I’ve been polishing the watch with a microfiber cloth. It is coming out super nice. The band will be here tomorrow.

If you are interested in taking more of a go at polishing it get a Cape Cod polishing cloth, heck you may have some given your avocation. Just do sit around doing it all day. It will polish gold very quickly.

Amazon and a billion other places. They are not watch specific, often used for polishing silver.

I took it down off eBay. It’s growing on me now that it’s semi-polished.

I’m only going to buy a new espresso machine if I sell my current machine and bean grinder. I already had it for sell before I got this watch.

And I just ordered a cape cod cloth

I do kind of have the fever right now, but I know finding this watch pretty much for free, is like winning at a casino the first time you go. You think it’s easy.

Actually, two of my dream watches I’ve always wanted are either a nice Breitling or this WW2 Rolex

I figure you can’t go wrong by doing opposite of OT expert advice.

In their defense, we didn’t know it was 14kt gold. We thought it was the 14kt GF, worth about $300 in nice condition.

Jesus, the condition of that case hurts my feelings. Did they put it down the fricking disposal?

It wasn’t as bad as it looks in those pictures. Those were his photos.

Here it is from just hand buffing with a microfiber
