A plain invicta isn’t a bad watch. I know that they’re like Gurkha cigars but they do their job and look nice enough.
How many do you have?

The correct answer is a Pepsi GMT Master II on the jubilee. Batgirl and Bruce Wayne are awesome as well.

Willing to go used but the used market seems overwhelmed with Rolex at the moment
Plenty of great watches on secondary market that aren't Rolex. Tons of good places to look and it is definitely a buyer's market right now unless you are after an Aquanaut, Nautilis, Royal Oak, Daytona or some Rolex models. Otherwise the world is your oyster.

I bought one when I was poor and in college. I left it in the car in Vegas during the day and all the paint ran off the face

You don’t have any crypto investments

I’d go with a Rolex GMT Bruce Wayne

Rolex. No doubt. You will not regret it.
I've worn a Rolex everyday for the last 40+ years. Earlier this year, I bought a Cartier for shites and giggles. . . pretty sure it won't last nearly as long.

I’d wear a Cartier Santos medium for sure

The way you're framing your entire post is weird to me.
You want to reward yourself, which is cool. You already have a sub, which is cool too if you like the sub. You're looking for an upgrade in the 10-20k range and rattled off a list of brands that vary wildly.
Do you just want to impress people with a nice watch being a teacher in ascension parish? If so, stick with Rolex because nobody will know half of the brands you listed and think they came from Macy's, and the others don't even fit into luxury (Citizen, Seiko, Movado (lol)).
My $0.02. Decide what you want out of a watch. Maybe that is just to impress people in ascension parish. Maybe it's a dive watch. Maybe it's a pilots watch. Maybe it's something you know you can beat the shite out of and never worry and give it to your kids in 30 years.
Then shop that watch, across every price up to your max budget.

Can you recommend some good places to look for the secondary market? TIA

I like the Rolex Sky Dweller.
As long as he doesn't want blue or especially green in steel. SS in black or white is probably doable in the budget. You might even get lucky and get one of those at the AD.

If you want something other than Rolex, I think the IWC Ingenieur looks really cool.

Watch market is cratering. I wouldn’t buy anything unless it’s at msrp or less.
This is clickback BS in my opinion but I am actively in the market for a handful of watches and it my tastes seem to align with the taste makers.
Look at the watch market combined values over say the last 10 years what you will see is an anomalous spike in 20-22 but if you continue the upward line from 2019 it runs smack into the 2024 numbers. The 20-22 spike was COVID/crypto induced but that market factor is mostly gone. You are just seeing a realignment but there is some more availability because a lot of wanna be gray market buyers/sellers got killed off because they bought at the top of the market. Look at Hodinkee that dropped tens of millions on stock at the top and now are out of the secondary market and they were far better capitalized than 99.9% of the people that jumped in.
That said try to buy a steel Patek, a big part of the Rolex catalog, many AP ROs, brown dial Overseas plus a laundry list of other watches at or under MSRP on the secondary market and you will be wishing for a long time.
I would love for the market to actually crash as I am in a buying mood but just about everything on my current wishlist still sees a significant premium and the wait times are still long for the average buyer.
To the OP that is a laundry list of brands. Every one of them has their place. What is it you actually want. Do you want a dress watch, another sports watch, a dual-time/GMT, a Flieger, or something else? Steel, PM, complicated, time only etc. There are watches and budgets that make every one of those manufacturers a reasonable choice but other types that make them poor choices are well out of your budget.

The blue dial IWC Mark XX gets me going. It's on a short list of blue dials I'm on the hunt for.
I also stepped into a Breitling boutique today and, for very different reasons, was really into the new Avenger 42 blue dial.

The least expensive most accessible way to get into a Genta-designed steel integrated bracelet watch. The 32111 movement is in-house to Richemont but not technically built by IWC if that matters to someone but a load cheaper than a Patek Nautilus or AP Royal Oak.

I’d get a Vacheron Constantin, personally. No one, except a “watch person” would notice it. Very good time piece, very unassuming…

Have you seen the Mark XVIII Laureus Sport LE from '21. It has a blue ceramic case. I looked at one last week. Very interesting watch although it presents a little Swatchlike.
