Was Reddit ever not a series of echo chambers?

I didn't use Reddit back in the early days of the internet, but I think it's probably one of my least favorite websites now and I recently added it to the bin of websites I'll try to never frequent along with various mainstream social media platforms. From a cursory glance, most of the popular subreddits seem to suffer from a quality perspective because the users seem to succumb to groupthink, enjoy censorship of alternate perspectives to whatever the consensus of the subreddit is, lack the use of critical thinking when putting forward responses and instead opting for recycled jokes, and easily succumb to emotional and infantile responses when confronted with even slight deviations out of the norm.
Some of these traits I do observe here and elsewhere on the internet, and it makes me wonder to what extent this is a symptom of the internet at large; but I think Reddit amplifies this tendency and makes it worse than alternatives through policies such as:
(1) The upvote/downvote system hiding posts that are sufficiently downvoted essentially promoting censorship via the userbase
(2) An unpaid moderation staff that seem generally quick on the trigger to delete posts and ban users for failing to conform.
I could go on, but I'll leave at it this. Reddit seemed to be a great place on its surface to go get specific information and have a dialogue about niche subjects. However, it is mostly a terrible place to have dialogue. I suspect the Reddit model is to blame for amplifying groupthink, but I'm curious if this model ever actually worked. For people who frequented Reddit in its early days, was it always like this or is this a newer phenomena?

Reddit is for porn, and only porn.
Are there other subreddits?

Joined in 2015. It was an echo chamber then. It’s great for niche topics tho.
ETA: apparently I joined in 2011. frick, what year is it? Where am I?

It’s been an echo chamber for as long as I can remember
You can have disagreements under a certain umbrella, but go too far and you’re done.
I feel like It’s become wayyy too easy for people to curate their information (not just on Reddit but everywhere) to suit their values and I think that’s a huge reason people are so dug in to their positions now.

Why would anyone go there...

Reddit is the message boards of the Revolution, comrade. It attracts a certain type of person.

It used to be the best place on the internet. Everything changed leading up to the 2016 election. Overnight it turned into a place of censorship and unlimited shills.

the up/down vote function created that, which is why I never actively use reddit. It's good as a reference material, but impossible for me to actively use

Two things
One, you can easily choose to sort by new
Two, you’re currently posting on an echo chamber

It's very good for niche hobbies, but it's left of Mao for the most part.

Yes that is a major variable in the polarization for sure

Joined in 2011 and it was better then.
Reddit has a major problem with delusional moderators.
What used to be funny or interesting subreddits are now dominated by 15 year old European wannabe socialists. If the average age of posters on this site is 30-40 year olds the average age on Reddit is probably 15-20 year olds.
If you wanna see titties it’s still great though

You can get around this by sorting it differently. You can sort by "old" or "new" to have posts in sequential order. Or you can sort by "controversial" which brings the most downvoted posts to the top.

This is the bigger issue. Different subreddits have varying degrees of moderation so there are still some relatively lax subs out there. The subs for the sports leagues suck arse in this regard

The top thread on r/nola is a tranny rally. That’s all you really need to know.

The Karma system on there is as poisonous as it gets. If you don’t have enough upvotes on your posts you literally CAN NOT POST. Think about what that means!
If your thoughts go against the majority then you’ll be downvoted until you are silenced.
That’s why every sub, no matter how small, is full of loud, narcissistic people.
This is why I love TD. If someone wants to come here and act like a huge liberal they’ll get downvoted and mocked relentlessly… but never silenced.
This is how society ought to work.

I use Reddit for certain things. I would never engage in politics on Reddit. It is group think progressive all the time.

Sometimes I read the political board here and then go to r/Nola just so I can find a middle ground

completely acknowledged, and I don't say this without realizing how dire it paints the current state of affairs, but I find this website actually promotes better diversity of thought than almost all of the subreddits I've frequented the last few years.

Without Reddit how would we find any of the nubile schoolteachers?
About the only one I still visit occasionally (even if it has lost most of its charm since they raised the bridge) is r/11foot8/
