This is a story about successful kids (especially boys), common sense, and research. Most of us spend hours each day sitting at work. Science says it's killing us, and we have developed all kinds of fads to combat it--from standing desks to smartphone alerts to get us up and moving. Armed with that knowledge, however, what do we force our kids to do each day at school? Sit still, for six or eight hours.

Now researchers say that mistake leads us into a three-pronged, perfect storm of problems:
1. We overprotect kids, trying to keep them safe from all physical dangers--which ultimately increases their likelihood of real health issues.

2. We inhibit children's academic growth (especially among boys), because the lack of physical activity makes it harder for them to concentrate.

3. When they fail to conform quietly to this low-energy paradigm, we over-diagnose or even punish kids for reacting the way they're naturally built to react.

There is a lot more in this article

You cared enough to come into this thread and tell me you do not care. Your message would have been more clear if you would have simply not posted in the thread.

Didn’t read the whole thing but from the parts you quoted it’s not really something to agree or disagree with. It’s pretty much fact.

I really don't understand how this country hasn't changed it's format of teaching.

The French. Look at how they raise children. I wont link because if you care enough, you will research on your own. They have it down.

Quit procrastinating Billy and take your adderall and Paxil.

Now we have 5 sheets of English to do before you have to go to therapy.

You’ll be happy I fixed a vegan gluten free dinner tonight.

It's not that instructional expectations haven't changed.

It's that they have.

If we weren’t “designed” to sit for any period of time then why are our asses cushioned with the most tissue?

Research shows that active learning is the best strategy for instruction. We won’t fully commit to it though and have decided to define active learning as groupwork, Socratic circles, and flipped classroom models.

I just did a quick google and one thing I came across is how the French introduce their kids to different types of food at an early age. Once they are off the bottle, there really isn't "baby food". In America we feed them shite like mac & cheese out of the box, chicken nuggets, and then try to force them to eat veggies...

But if you start them off with veggies and different types of foods, they will not be in a restaurant throwing a fit because they don't want to eat something they are not use to eating..

That pretty much sums up part of the article I read.

So basically, people need to stop being so delicate with their kids and not assume that just because they are kids you should feed them foods that you would consider "kid food".

Learned behavior starts at a very early age. Like speaking multiple languages. It's much easier to learn multiple languages when kids are around the different languages.. Than when they are 16 years old and takes Spanish in HS for the first time.

Just curious. How many kids do you have? How many have you raised?

0 on both.

I guess I have no business discussing this topic right?

I just figured when you make comments like this you’re speaking from experience. Guess you’re just talking out of your arse again.

As a man in education, I 100% agree with this. We try to cram kids in a desk for hours and if they don’t sit still, we medicate them. It’s bullshite! Kids should take 5 classes each day, Literature, Science, Social Studies, Math, and PE. Recess should occur betweeen EACH class! Reading skills can be taught imbedded in the other subjects.
