New Hampshire I can vouch for, it's quite nice and imo better than it's neighbors.
Nowhere is perfect but it's a damn sight better than LA. Property taxes are expensive up there but that's how they price out the riffraff

In general, old folks move from places like that to Florida or Arizona.
There is a reason why Florida in general has a reputation of “God’s waiting room” and Miami in general being seen as having huge numbers of New York Jews living there in retirement.

Correct. Any list where AZ, SC, NC, FL, and states in region 4 or lower don’t dominate is not a serious list.

I lived up there for 3 years before moving back to the South. I don't understand how sitting inside for half the year because its too cold...and getting seasonal depression from gloom and doom winter contributes to a high "Quality of Life".
I know people who fled Seattle because they had bad Seasonal Affective Disorder and they weren’t going to keep drugging themselves up just to continue working in a lucrative field.

Texas sucks for retirees. Spread the word, baws.

this forum wildly overstates the "brutality" of winters
Which is fine. Let the rest of the US believe it is impossible to live here in the winter. Let them also believe Healthcare is impossible to find. I'd love to describe my 83 year old dad's emergency room visit in April. His 30 minute drive and no wait to get in probably beats the time in most metro areas. Plus, he wasn't surrounded by the typical emergency room visitors. Definitely sucks where he lives.

I've started to notice Wisconsin is always right in the middle of these rankings. We aren't the fattest or stupidest of people, nor do we live in the best, cheapest, or most expensive place. Wisconsin is that bowl of porridge that is just right.
Serious question: How are your taxes? I'd love to live in MN but I've dug into their tax structure and it is punitive. Wisconsin appeals to us because of the lakes and trees.

Went to the brand new Baptist hospital in Oxford. My toddler had to be sedated for teeth work. It was one of the nicest most professional experiences I've ever had at a hospital. Way better than any of my experiences at a metro hospital.

I lived in MN. No sales on groceries or clothes, but everything else has higher taxes including state income tax.
Also even though theres no sales tax on groceries....groceries here still cost more than states down South.

Wyoming and Florida are the only two legit options

And you might only drive 2 miles. That’s the upside of getting to pick where in a state you want to live.
On the east side of Wyoming, if you want to see a top level specialist at a top level hospital you'll have to go to Denver. On the West side, it's Salt Lake. For South Dakota it would be Minneapolis. That may not matter much to you right now, but of you're 77 and need an urgent cardiology consult...

Lot less cultcha.
Outside Twin Cities there is exactly zero cultcha in Minnesota.
Same with Massachusetts and Boston.
#2 & #1 in quality of life respectively. I can attest to this. I've lived in both places.
Northern Minnesota is one of the whitest places on earth. Lake Superior in the north country is nice too.
The Berkshires in Central Mass is white af. The Cape is white af (even more so in the off season than tourist season if that's possible). Plymouth, white af.
It's definitely easy to see the diametrically opposed "quality of life vs cultcha". It's hilarious how unintentional but obviously racist these studies' outcomes are. Every year some publication tells white people (because that's who reads these things) they'll live a better life where there's more white people than not, and that it's as important as taxes and healthcare. AND the more white people and less diversity, the better their lives will be.
My question is, who doesn't already know this?

list is bullshite. you and i both know we live in God's Country and we got virtually ZERO crime, beautiful climate, geography, people are friendly, access to a 'big city' nearby with lots of art & restaurant/entertainment options, world class medical center at Vandy, easy travel to gulf beaches, no state income tax, low property tax rates....
geez, these lists are dumb. i aint going anywhere.

Healthcare
The Jackson area has UMMC. The other population centers are basically suburbs of Memphis/NOLA/Mobile.

Sales tax where my parents live is 5.5%. Not sure about property tax, but I never heard my Dad complain about it and my Dad boycotted a whole county so he didn't have to pay an extra .5% sales tax to fund the Packers stadium. If they were high, he would have certainly complained about it.

Most of those states at the top feature winters that would be daunting for an elderly person to endure.
Assuming they aren't sleeping outside or exposed to the elements often, that's not that a big concern.
Besides Colorado has some of the healthiest people in the country.
I lived in Colorado for over eight years, it's a lot of fat bitches there too, baw.
