I think that a pharmacist should be allowed to refuse to give drugs based on his own moral beliefs but walgreens or whatever other pharmacy should be able to fire his arse for it. frick all these protections for religious folks. Your christian beliefs keep you from prescribing birth control? fired. You want lighter work duty during ramadan because you're fasting? fired. IDK why people expect employees to be given more rights and protections than employers.

I just want to know the details, like when the pharmacist said he wouldn’t fill the prescription, did she storm out irrate before he had a chance to refer her to someone else.
I mean as others have said the pharmacist has the right not to fill it under their company policy.
This is the thing if he believes that life starts at conception then in his view he is an accessory to murder.
And he had no knowledge of why she was given the medicine so he couldn’t have said.
Personally I bet this is much more grey than what they are saying, and find it hard to believe that this is the first time the pharmacist has been asked to fulfill this prescription. So we need to know what has happened in the past.
So I say let’s put down the pitchforks until more is known. We only have one side of the story, at this point in time.
Edit: this is also a bit weird that she is trying to enact a law based on an experience she had. I think something is afoot here.
This all isn’t to say I don’t sympathize with her, but I just want more facts.

Where the pharmacist made his mistake was telling her in front of other customers. He should have called her aside and had a private conversation.

If that is true then there is a good possibility of a hipa violation.

I highly doubt he'll even get more than a talking to over this. Pharmacists aren't just a dime a dozen. They are worth a lot of money.
It's his license. He may not own the store, but he does own his license, to whatever extent you can own something that the state creates.
Absolutely nothing will come of this. It will blow over in a week just like every other story these days.
This board bitches non-stop over a guy being sued over a gay wedding cake but in this case we want to force a pharmacist to do something against his beliefs? A pharmacist, not a cake baker?
Unless the guy has a history of causing trouble it won't even go in his file.

I saw on a Catholic forum that the dosage is different. If that's true this guy is too dumb to be a pharmacist.

You probably thought this was some kind of gotcha moment, didn't you? Too bad it's an apples and oranges example.
(FTR, the pharmacist needs to be canned)

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. There is a large over supply of pharmacists similar to lawyers (although not as bad). A retail pharmacist is most certainly a dime a dozen and this pharmacist will get fired.

This the OT. Pitchforks come out at the initial post.

He's not going to be fired unless he has a history of causing problems.

Another point: an Rx should have a Dx code so it can be billed to insurance. If that's the case it should have been another tipoff that the prescription was legitimate.

Like that jogger that was held in the USA for 2 weeks. Now it sounds like Canada was the one dragging there feet.

He will definitely lose his job. Not only did he refuse to fill the prescription based on moral grounds, he didn't transfer the prescription to another pharmacy per Walgreen's policy. Not to mention his name is all over the national media and he/walgreens are getting raked over the coals.

He has that right. Now if Walgreens doesn't decide to back him for whatever reason they can hang him with their corporate policy. But like I said, if he's been a good pharmacist, I doubt that happens.

They most certainly will fire this person.

They will do it on the grounds that he did not follow proper protocols, nor did he maintain the individual’s privacy (possible).

And I only say that since this prescription was given as an option to my wife for this same situation
Guy will get fired and rightfully so but shouldn’t lose his license

Based on current informatuon he should be fired, but let’s hear the other side of the story first.
