Because restaurant prices would jump 20% and we'd have to listen to all the OT ballers bitch about paying $14 for their fried cheese sticks at Applebee's.
They don’t tip in Europe and the price of a meal there is much cheaper than in the US.

There are ways for employers to motivate employees that don’t require the customer to pay employees directly.
An extra 20% is an extra 20% whether it's direct or indirect

What was the service provided that deserved a tip?
cooking the food
placing food in box
walking food to car
her actual service time was probably 1 minute

frick that. Even marginally good servers make way more than they would get paid if it was an hourly wage. It's honestly a great system that benefits everyone except two groups: 1) Bad servers 2) Poor, trashy customers
Actually poor trashy customers benefit. They have their meals subsidized by people who actually tip.

Then why does anybody salaried do more than the bare minimum? We are all expected to perform our jobs well.
And usually in keeping with your pay is what you will receive. What you’re asking is for a person making barely above minimum wage to give you service above that which to be expected from such a person, and maintain the attraction to that service industry. You’re going to lose an arse load of people, and replace them with order takes from McDonalds who also do their jobs, but that’s exactly the kind of service industry you’re going to be left with. Or, let’s say you average what they make and raise the prices to pay for them. Now, you’re still paying the same amount with no incentive to go that extra mile for the general public who if you’ve ever worked with them in this industry you’ll soon realize are not the easiest son of a guns to please, and are often quite unreasonable. Turnover will kill that part of the food industry.

That's false. Typical meals are more expensive and seating take a lot longer because the waitstaff handles 3-4 times the amount of tables. It's a cool system but wouldn't fly here because most Americans don't want to be in the restaurant for over three hours.

Exactly. The same people who disagree with this will go to the chik fil a threads and compliment the quality of employees they have.

No, it isn't. But keep believing that.

Just so you know theres no tipping, at all. Bars, take away, cafe, bistro, fast food...
Eating a 3 hour meal is not all eating over there.

1 minute to put together a $735 to go order?
You are incredibly ignorant

I went to a bar by waterloo in London and tipped for my beer. The waiter laughed and put the tip i gave in a box for charity fund raiser they are having.
Service staff has become entitled here in US.
Charge me more for my meal and not make me pay your staff

Or an excuse to pass off employee salaries to the customer. It makes it super easy for the employer to say, "You didnt get a tip? Tough shite." Even when the employee did absolutely nothing wrong.
And fight the tight wads out there who want top shelf, but don’t think they should have to pay for top shelf. That’s a lot of people in my experience. I’d rather let the customer pay for service rendered than fight raising food prices.

I know. I've spent significant time in Europe. All of the employees get paid more per hour (not to mention a higher level of government subsidation

Fair enough, I'm talking about the typical seated-restaurant setting.

You'd be here in three days bitching about how high food prices are and how shitty the customer service is.
