Yes, it clearly states it does not release any claims you have against VW if you do.

Anyone who accepts a class action lawsuit as their claim is a fool. Honestly, this is better than most class action payouts in terms of auto manufacturers.
If it said in the terms: Anyone who accepts this releases VW from all further claims.

If you're not waiving your rights at a potential future lawsuit, this is pretty good on VWs part.
I loved my Jetta(2013 SEL I got in 2012) and fully plan on owning another VW at some point in the future.

It revolves around the difference between the U.S. and the German government. From the start, VW was pressured by the German government to accept responsibility and begin making it right. I fully expect VW to set the standard in terms of making the consumer whole. They came out, said they fricked up, and would make it right. Here in the good ol' US of A we'll fricking use taxpayer money to make the company whole when they frick up.

But regardless, this is roughly 4% of the sticker price of the car, and it's not something that was dictated they do. To me, that's refreshing.

Yea, it's a good gesture and much more than I was expecting to see out of this. I'm sure they are genuinely trying to make right on the deal and save face with the customers.

I think y'all (owners) will ultimately be OK. The cars will be correctly repaired, they will bounce back on value, and we all know the public has a damn short memory. Plus, it's not like this is a safety or reliability defect.

You're correct that I don't have to get anything done, but Texas has the right to not give me an inspection sticker or renew registration making it illegal to drive my car. Then I can't sell it easily because a buyer can't register it without the fix.
It's not that people "care that their emissions are higher", although I'm sure some hippies do. It's that it affects the legality to drive the car. The higher emissions make the car illegal to sell and register according to the EPA.
Although I do not think they are enforcing anything on drivers at the moment. The expectation is that they will when a fix is released.

Yeah, they'll have to fix it to meet federal standards, which will cover state tests.
I'm pretty confident they'll get that done. Germans live for this kind of task (think Von Braun).

It should be for everything (bumper to bumper) so that people may be able to recover some of their lost value - and because most will likely drive their wheels off.

Here's $1000. You're welcome for better fuel mileage and reliability. Now bring your car in so we can reprogram it to get worse fuel mileage and break down within a year (requiring a complete engine rebuild).
