Looking forward to more new libraries that nobody goes to and more corruption from the Council on Aging with taxpayer dollars. Good job EBR.

Well we just voted to not fund them at all for the foreseeable future, but don’t let facts rain on your parade.

Agree. There’s obviously no place for consolidated government in this parish anymore. Nobody is in it together, so there’s really no point.

Pretty sure it stays funded at the full amount for two more years, at which time they'll probably propose a renewal of the millage that will probably pass.

I agree, but it’s not in the cards. It would never pass.

I don't believe that's what happens. The millage renewals were part of the THRIVE proposal, but they weren't immediately expiring. It was just to appease the orgs they wanted to reallocate money from.

ETA: so the library gets funds from 2025 I assume. When does COA and mosquito abatement expire?

ETAA: don't think for a second we won't be voting again on millages soon. This package was shot down, but if they were brought as a clean renewal package I'm sure they would pass easily.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT FAILS?
• The Library's CURRENT 10-Year Dedicated Property Tax EXPIRES in
December 2025.
• This comprises almost 100% of the Library's funding.
• SO... If the Tax Proposal FAILS in November 2025, the Library receives ZERO revenue for the 2026 tax year. We would be fully funded in 2026 from 2025 tax year revenues.
• The Library would begin to use funds from its savings in Fund Balance in order to operate. To be responsible and prudent, we would start to operate at a reduced expenditure rate, until such time as new tax revenues are approved.
• The Library would have to go back out to the voters with a new millage proposition sometime in 2026. There are several possible dates for such an election.
• Since we are a department of the City-Parish, the Metro Council must approve any NEW Tax Election, to take place in 2026 or beyond.
• The revenues from a successful Spring 2026 election would not be received until January 2027.
• Revenues from a Fall 2026 election would not be received until January 2028.
• The Library's Fund Balance could sustain operations for at least one year.
The longer the Library "lives off its savings," the greater the impact on the Capital Improvements Plan and all future plans.

I disagree. You have the Gravy Chambers types who are tired of sharing the metro council and want complete control of BR. It may actually be a unifying issue, though ultimately bad for BR.

But you have all the leeches who do not want to be on their own, plus those that are scared to let the “minorities” rule.

From the library’s own website:
quote:

Your award-winning East Baton Rouge Parish Library system is funded almost entirely by a 10-year Dedicated Tax. This comprises almost 100% of the Library’s funding for all operations, including staffing, books, supplies, utilities, maintenance, and contractual services. It also funds the Pay-As-You-Go Capital Improvements Plan. The current tax expires in December 2025. Unless the renewal tax passes on November 15, the Library will receive ZERO new funds in 2026.

Highly unlikely. People aren’t voting for taxes anymore.

Moral has got to be low for Coach Sid

It was pretty sleezy how the plan was put forward to vote on. He gambled and lost big time. Just like Broome.

Should have been separate votes. But now it’s blown up in his face with no renewal on all 3 now.

If he had separated the issues, I bet all 3 renewals would have passed. Now he looks like he caused all 3 tax renewals to fail by hooking this BS to them.

But the politicians will be back soon for your money. They always will be back and always for more.

All 3 NO.
All votes in.

Well well well

Dwight Hudson helped write the THRIVE proposal, and they were never honest about what was going to happen. He (Dwight) kept saying that it wasn't a tax increase, despite the fact it would have caused tax bills to go up.

How much can I expect my property tax bill to go down next year?

I think the property tax bills will be unchanged for this December. Next year they could go down, but I see a 0% chance these millages arent voted on again, multiple times if necessary, before 2026 bills are calculated.

frick City of BR.

Just think this could have all been avoided if the idiot Black Caucus in the Legislature had just let StG have an ISD.

Time to see if Sid actually cuts the 420 jobs that this was going to help save. Time to split city/parish government.

Libraries are monuments to an obsolete irrelevant system. They don’t even teach the Dewey Decimal System in school anymore.
