Janet Reno should've been charged with murder.

She was a stooge. The FBI and ATF actively lied to her about everything they were doing like ATF did to Ann Richards to get the National Guard helis.

It’s my recollection they didn’t have proof or cause of anything. They did eventually get a search warrant then got into a gun fight. Lot of mistakes made. Sad situation.

The reality is the ATF was fighting for their existence during this time frame. They wanted a big "showtime" raid to on some cultists to show awesome they were to congress.

They got approval for a knock search. Their first plan of action was to shoot the dogs. Seems legit for a knock warrant. They were always going in shooting. That's why they leaked the raid to the media to have cameras there to show how awesome they were to the rest of the world.

Oh if there is still the ATF friends and family on this board still lurking, come join in the conversation again.

Two things can be true at the same time: David Karesh was certifiable and the ATF were pieces of shite for how they went about that whole situation.

Exactly. It takes both sides to do the wrong thing for what happened there. Karesh was out of his god damn mind and his people did whatever he said.

I remember watching the mini series on this and I forgot the details of how the FBI messed it up, but it was a rank situation right? Someone pulled rank.. Or were there too many chiefs butting heads?

No matter what, I blame Karesh because he is the reason the FBI went to Waco. He pressed their buttons and he created the situation that resulted in the FBI messing up.

It feels like this is the root of so many of our divides.

These national stories hit and we battle over good vs evil tropes when the truth is a lot of them are simply crazy meets crazy and we end up with a catastrophic outcome that reasonable people usually avoid with ease

We do not do well with “both sides messed up and lessons can be learned by everyone”

Because the aim is to keep us divided based on race, religion, and partisanship, instead of where the true divide is, and that is class.

It's always been the highest classes against all, and it always will be.

I used to live less than a mile from there.

Friend of mines family owns ranch on one side of it. They lived through and watched the whole thing. His parents talked about driving through the road block every day, the blaring music, animal sounds, and then the unfortunate ending and shootout.

I did a ton of digging into RR and Koresh stuff a long time ago. Just sickening that our government did that to citizens. Ruby Ridge was horrific.

And to follow it up- the whole thing in Elk. Everybody around says Koresh was never hiding. Constantly out in town, etc. They could have grabbed him any time. No need for innocent kids to be harmed.

Also- Crazy that the same sniper Horiuci was the trigger man at both of those. I know military guys follow orders. But you'd have to be a different kind of cold to take out an unarmed woman holding a baby, and then a short time later open fire on more innocent people in Elk at the BD compound.

There's not much there anymore. They pulled the school bus out of the pond years ago and cleaned up any of the other remnants that were left. Just the small monument stuff you mentioned that's left now.

For me, it goes to power. Who has the power in a situation? Here, FedGov had the power. Because they had the power, they were the ones in position to determine how things went down. They chose poorly. To me, generally the party with the most power is responsible if things go off the rails. Of course that goes along with the idea of comparative fault- the idea that both parties in a situation carry fault, it’s a matter of how much gets assigned to each. So for me the party with the power is assigned the most fault.

I went there in September 2021, Labor Day week. It’s in the middle of nowhere. It was bizarre and, yes, humbling thinking of the people who burned to death there. There was a family living in the back of the chapel when we went, the only remaining building on the site. A scraggly dude came out and talked to us briefly. A woman carrying a young child peeked out of the back door behind the altar but quickly disappeared. I remember it was over 100 degrees every day I was in Texas that week and they didn’t have air conditioning.
