quote:

A vintage World War II airplane crashed while trying to land in Connecticut Wednesday morning, sending giant plumes of smoke rising from Bradley International Airport.

The B-17 owned by the Collings Foundation — a group that hosts regular historical reenactments — crashed into a shed while trying to land at the airport in Windsor Locks, witnesses told the Hartford Courant.

Photos showed flames and huge clouds of black smoke that could be seen for miles as at least two dozen fire engines raced to the scene.

Multiple injuries had been reported, the paper said, while @EasternCtFire tweeted that there was “one seriously burned victim, numerous yellow tags.” It was not clear how many people had been on board when it crashed.

That sucks. I wish there were more WW2 planes in flying condition. Some of the most beautiful flying machines ever made came out of that war.

I always feel bad when one of these old warbirds go down because I tend to worry about the aircraft first. At the end of the day the folks on it are way more important than the plane itself, no matter how rare. Hope everyone got out.

Did Harry Connick Jr. make it?

Damn, what a shame. My dad was a private pilot and some if my best mememories of being a kid were going to airshows. We'd fly down to Lakeland, Florida for the Sun N' Fun airshow just about every year.

All the warbirds were always my favorite and the B-17 being a main one of them due to the movie the Memphis Belle.

Keep 'em Flying!

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

Death of the Ball Turret Gunner.

When I was small, that poem freaked me out.

Hope there are plenty of these restored but not flown as these guys are slowly destroying history.

Isn't this the third B17 crash in the past few years?

Floating down through the clouds
Memories come rushing up to meet me now.
In the space between the heavens
and in the corner of some foreign field
I had a dream
I had a dream
Good-bye Max

Maybe I'm just overly scared, but I'd have reservations about flying on a 75 year old plane.

Thirteen people on board, three were crew members.

Two confirmed fatalities and the rest taken to three hospitals.

I also feel for the loss of a historic plane. There are dozens of B-17s not flying, but only a handful airworthy.

RIP to the dead and to the historic aircraft.

There are plenty of old planes that get around safely, but they are all mass produced and there are usually a lot of them around. Parts are easy to get. For a B-17 though, keeping it running and finding parts was probably a bitch.

Damn, I saw those planes last year at the Lakefront Airport show. Sad.

An article said there are 18 registered. I don't think more than a few airworthy.
