It has nothing to do with their over-arching military goals. They're poor and poorly equipped, Russia's frontline troops don't have night vision capability lmao. Even the US basic infantry have that capability now.

Bout sold every piece of Russian equipment he could get his hands on. What he stole was never replaced and once Russia got in a shooting war they opened the warehouses and there is nothin there.

I can’t muster a whole bunch of give-a-shite about this swap.
One one hand, Griner should have known not to break Russia’s drug laws. Shes been there many times. Do the crime, do the time.
On the other hand, she wasn’t smuggling drugs, just bringing on some personal THC. Her imprisonment so far is penalty enough as far as I’m concerned, but of course, that’s for the Russians to decide.
On the third hand, it’s probably good for both Russia and the U.S. to get this episode behind us. If the Russians hadn’t invaded, and we were on a “peace-time footing” with them, this would have gone a lot easier. The US sending them about in exchange helps the Russians save face.
I probably would have let her sit, or worked a better deal, but it’s not that big of an issue. Time to move on.

I hate Russians and the Saudis. Bout has been in jail for 15 years and was nearing parole in a few years anyway. But then again I knew who Victor Bout was before today, unlike you.
